Will Deshaun Watson play for the Texans this year?

After Texans quarterback Deshaun Watson showed up at training camp, the Texans quickly started trying to trade him. With no one willing to offer the price the Texans are looking for, the Texans are apparently turning to Plan B.

As Yahoo Sports’ Charles Robinson noted, Texans “did not give upOn Watson playing for the Texans in 2021.

“They don’t accept lowball offers,” adds Robinson. “That’s why they don’t communicate too much with the teams. Unless there is a strong offer, the Texans’ brass will try to put it back in the fold before the start of the season.

Meanwhile, John McClain of Houston Chronicle reiterated something he had believed for a while: Watson will never play for the Texans again.

The wild card in all of this is Watson’s legal situation. Watson’s camp thinks a grand jury is inevitable. If he is charged with a single felony charge via a proceeding that involves unilateral presentation of evidence without representation by Watson, he will surely land on paid leave. That’s why teams are reluctant to even address Houston’s expectations.

Another factor, frankly, goes to Patriots coach Bill Belichick. It is believed that, like so many former Belichick lieutenants, new Texans general manager Nick Caserio is unwilling to make a deal Belichick would consider a bad one. So Caserio would rather not make any deals, at least not for now.

Chances are, Watson will eventually be allowed to return to the NFL. He could miss a season or two until that happens. And there is a lingering possibility that he will be convicted of sexual misconduct and jailed.

Either way, Texans aren’t inclined to get a bad deal. They prefer not to agree. And they’d rather have Watson play for them until it’s time to make a deal.
