South Carolina Head Coach Shane beamer is still under his feet in his first season in the role, but he’s had a lot of help. Coaches across the country have given Beamer advice, and that even includes his predecessor in Colombia.
In an interview with SEC Now, Beamer was asked what it was like learning the ropes of his first job as head coach. Between the former boss of Beamer in Oklahoma and his own father, the new head coach of Gamecocks has not been short of advice throughout the process.
“I’ve spoken to more head coaches in the past three weeks than I probably have in my entire life… guys from the SEC, the CCA and the Big 12,” Beamer said. “I talked to Lincoln riley a lot. He called just to check on me more than once just to see how everything was going. My father is certainly someone I rely on a lot because he has held this seat for a long time. It was a good thing as we put the staff in place. I contacted coaches about potential hires to take all their advice and write it down. It has been excellent training points.
There was, however, a somewhat unexpected source of advice for Beamer. The current South Carolina head coach has revealed that the former South Carolina head coach Will muschamp has also been someone he leaned on while his sea legs are on him.
“Until you’re in that chair, you don’t really know,” Beamer said. “It has been beneficial, and I appreciate and have a lot of respect for Will muschamp. He was very open and very helpful to me. Anything I need or questions for him. He doesn’t have to do that. Lots of respect for him and how helpful he was when needed.
About a month before the college hired Beamer to be their next head coach, South Carolina was fired Will muschamp, who had been at work since December 2015.
One of the tips Beamer learned from his father, Frank beamer, over the years, a coach is only as good as the people with whom he surrounds himself. Beamer plans to hire the best staff possible and let them do their jobs without getting in the way.
“I learned this from my father; You hire great coaches and you let them become coaches, ”Beamer said. “I am very fortunate in my career to have led so many different positions. I want to bounce back. I am starting to hire good coaches again. I will not interrupt the exercises. I want to be there and support the whole team and help in different areas. I definitely won’t be one of those guys sitting on a golf cart or standing in the tower for two hours. I have a lot of energy and I am active and I will probably bounce all over the place. “
