Will Muschamp steps up in Georgia as a field coach

Scott Cochran, as of now, is not Georgia’s special teams coordinator. But Dawgs247 has confirmed that a veteran coach will fill that assistant coach void for now. Sources close to the program told Dawgs247 that Will Muschamp will step in as an assistant on-field coach for UGA.

Muschamp was a head coach in Florida and South Carolina. He was also defensive coordinator at LSU, Auburn (twice) and Texas. Muschamp joined UGA’s support staff this offseason as a senior defensive analyst. His salary has been set at $ 300,000 for the 2021 season.

Kirby Smart’s history with Muschamp dates back 200o. It was at this point that Muschamp hired Smart to coach the defensive backs of Valdosta State. The two coached together again in 2004 at LSU when Muschamp was the head coach and Smart was the defensive back coach under Nick Saban.

When Saban briefly left college football for the NFL, Muschamp served as his defensive coordinator / head coach with the Miami Dolphins. Smart and Muschamp were on the same staff there in 2006, a year after Smart was the running backs coach in Georgia.

The two only joined forces this offseason after Muschamp was sacked as South Carolina head coach. Smart has spoken publicly about Muschamp’s impact on the program this spring.

“He’s probably the guy I rely on the most when it comes to coaching the coaches and selecting the exercises and ‘hey, how did you do that? How did you do this? Did you all do this period first? This period first? ‘Trying to find new ways to improve our program,’ said Smart. “I really like having him there. I like having him in meetings because that is not the skill set of a coach. He is certainly a knowledgeable and confident coach, but c ‘is a lot more, to me, I know he’s done things a lot of different ways. When you’re there between exercises or an exercise is going on, you walk over there and say, ” Hey, how did you do that? Is there a better way? What are you thinking about this? ‘ It’s useful. It certainly breeds confidence and gives you more ways of doing things. “

It is not known whether or not Cochran will be able to join the program. For now, Muschamp is the 10th assistant coach on the pitch and this will also allow him to hit the road as a scout during the fall evaluation period.

Dawgs247 has yet to confirm Muschamp’s role regarding special teams. What we do know, however, is that several UGA assistant coaches, including inside linebacker coach and defensive co-coordinator Glenn Schumann and close-wing coach Todd Hartley have experience. in training special teams.
