- The star said they chose to be monogamous “for the better part of our relationship.”

Will Smith has spoken candidly about the decision he and Jada Pinkett Smith made not to practice monogamy at some point in their marriage.
“Jada never believed in conventional marriage… Jada had family members who had unconventional relationships,” Smith, 53, said in a new interview for the November 2021 GQ cover. “So she did. grew up in a very different way than I grew up. “
“There have been endless important discussions about what relationship perfection is? What’s the best way to interact as a couple?” Smith continued. “And for much of our relationship, monogamy was what we chose, not thinking of monogamy as the only relational perfection.”
Smith and Pinkett Smith married in December 1997 and went on to welcome two children: son Jaden Smith and daughter Willow Smith, born in 1998 and 2000 respectively. Throughout their decades-long marriage, the couple spoke about how their relationship has evolved and why they no longer refer to each other as “married”.

Smith and the “Girls Trip” star also revealed details of their relationship on “Red Table Talk,” the Facebook Watch talk show hosted by Pinkett Smith.
In an episode released in July 2020, Pinkett Smith sat down with her husband for a candid conversation about her “entanglement” with R&B singer August Alsina.
Pinkett Smith has confirmed that she and Alsina have a relationship, which began a few years ago when she and Smith were “going through a rough patch” and separated during their marriage. The actress said she and Smith “were amicably separated” and that Alsina was “not a devastator.”
Towards the end of the episode, Smith said that he and Pinkett Smith “have truly arrived at this new place of unconditional love.” The stars also apparently alluded to the “Suicide Squad” star having a relationship outside of their marriage, but did not elaborate.
“There’s a real power in knowing that someone is rolling with you no matter what and you really can’t know until you’ve been through certain things,” Smith said, adding, “I’ll get you back, first and then. “
“Are you going to get me back?” Pinkett Smith intervened. “I think you got me back. I think we’re good at this, okay?”
The couple laughed before Smith said, “OK, that’s probably true.”

In his new interview with GQ, Smith explained that this unique dynamic worked for them, but he wouldn’t recommend it to others.
“We have given each other confidence and freedom, with the conviction that everyone must find their own path,” he said. “And marriage for us cannot be a prison. And I am not suggesting our route to anyone. I am not suggesting this route to anyone. But the experiences that the freedoms we have given ourselves and the unconditional support, for me, are the highest definition of love. “
Interviewer Wesley Lowery also noted in his GQ profile of Smith that the actor “delicately explained” to him that Pinkett Smith was not “the only one having other sex.” Lowery said he felt Smith wanted to say more, but decided not to when they spoke weeks later.
“It might sound hard to believe, but I would lose sleep if I didn’t give you the answer I know you could use,” Smith said. “I want to help you, I want you to be successful, I want you to have a title. But in the same way, I don’t want to face the backlash of this in the world.”
