Will Smith opened up about his non-traditional marriage to Jada Pinkett Smith in an interview for the November cover of GQ Monday.
“Jada never believed in conventional marriage,” he said. “Jada had family members who had an unconventional relationship. So she grew up in a very different way than I grew up. “
There have been endless important discussions about what relationship perfection is? What’s the best way to interact as a couple? ” He continued. “And for much of our relationship, monogamy was what we chose, not seeing monogamy as the only relational perfection.”
Smith and Pinkett Smith married in December 1997, before welcoming their son, Jaden Smith, in 1998, and daughter, Willow Smith, in 2000. Throughout their marriage, they were open to the evolution of their relationship, taking Pinkett on Smith’s Facebook Watch talk show Red table to delve into the details of their “unique union”.
In his interview with GQ, Smith admitted that while the unusual dynamic worked in his marriage to Pinkett Smith, he doesn’t recommend their setup for other couples.
“We have given each other confidence and freedom, with the conviction that everyone must find their own path,” he added. “And marriage for us cannot be a prison. And I don’t suggest our route to anyone. I am not suggesting this route to anyone. But the experiences that the freedoms we have given ourselves and the unconditional support, to me, are the highest definition of love.
Later in the interview, Wesley Lowery, Smith’s interviewer, writes that the actor “delicately explained” that Pinket Smith was not “the only one having other sex.” Lowery claims it was clear Smith had more to say, but the actor decided not to reveal more information after telling Lowery he would speak with Pinkett Smith before their next meeting.
“It might sound hard to believe, but I’d lose sleep if I didn’t give you the answer I know you could use,” Smith told Lowery. “I want to help you, I want you to be successful, I want you to have a title. But at the same time, I don’t want to face the backlash of this in the world. ”
