Will Jason Garrett be back for a second season as the New York Giants offensive coordinator?
That’s a good question after the Giants finished 31st in the league for points, yards and passing offense in 2020, and tied with the New England Patriots for a lower level of passing of touchdown with 12. Second-year quarterback Daniel Jones, statistically, hasn’t had the success he had as a rookie throwing the ball.
Garrett, coordinating an attack and calling the games for the first time since he was named head coach of the Dallas Cowboys in 2010, had to work around the loss of Saquon Barkley, a lack of dynamic receiving options and a line developing offensive. Still, his offense at times seemed static compared to many of the league’s most successful units.
Jones, for his part, doesn’t want anything to do with being drawn into a debate over Garrett’s future.
“I’m not sure I can comment on this,” Jones said Monday. “But I certainly enjoyed learning from Coach Garrett. I learned a ton of football, I learned a ton of philosophy about attacking, how he sees the game, what he learned during his time in the NFL as a player and coach. I really enjoyed working with him. I can’t wait to continue. I really enjoyed it. “
If he wants to leave Garrett, head coach Joe Judge could turn to Freddie Kitchens, the Giants’ tight ends coach. Kitchens was an offensive coordinator at Cleveland before becoming the Browns’ head coach in 2019. The judge could also watch the coaches of one of the half-dozen staff members where the head coaches were fired.
