Willis Tower SkyDeck: A protective layer cracks under visitors' feet in Chicago

Some visitors were frightened when the protective layer of the SkyDeck at the Willis Tower cracked on Monday, breaking into thousands of pieces, CBS reported Chicago. A video shot on the 103rd floor showed horrified visitors watching the crack from the security of the building.

However, the Willis Tower assured visitors that none of the guests were in danger, claiming that only the protective layer was cracked and that the glass floor underneath remained intact.

"There was a woman with two children and they looked really pale and scared because the floor had just cracked," Jesus Pintado told CBS Chicago.

"I'm afraid of heights in general, so when I saw that happening, I was as if nothing happened," said another witness, Karly Pintado.

The Ledge is designed to withstand five tons of pressure and can support 10,000 pounds. About 1.7 million tourists visit it each year. The ground is also cracked in 2014, generating a similar panic.
