Warner Bros. is back in a world of pure imagination, moving forward with plans for a prequel “Charlie and the Chocolate Factory”, newly titled “Wonka”.
The project has been in development for years, but has recently started to gain momentum again. The studio hopes to begin casting for the film soon, with the goal of releasing it in theaters on March 17, 2023.
David Heyman, whose CV includes the “Harry Potter” and “Paddington” franchise, is producing the film, based on a script by Simon Rich. They have both been attached to the film since 2016. Rich previously worked as a screenwriter on “Saturday Night Live” and wrote Seth Rogen’s latest photo, “An American Pickle,” which was based on the Rich New Yorker short story ” Sell Out “. Paul King, who directed ‘Paddington’ and its sequel, will direct the reboot.
Based on Roald Dahl’s popular children’s book “Charlie and the Chocolate Factory,” the story follows a poor boy named Charlie, who is one of five young people to win a golden ticket to visit the chocolate factory in world famous, but very secret, managed by Willy Wonka. Gene Wilder memorable played the character in 1971’s ‘Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory’. Johnny Depp went on to portray the famous chocolatier in the 2005 Tim Burton-directed reboot ‘Charlie and the Chocolate Factory’. Depp’s version of the mischievous character was slightly darker and strongly portrayed Wonka as a bizarre recluse with particular loathing for children and, by extension, family ties. Burton’s version was a commercial success, grossing $ 475 million at the global box office.
Plot details for “Wonka” have been largely kept under wraps, though the next adaptation will focus on Willy Wonka’s early days before operating his elaborate home of confectionery creations. In Burton’s account, Wonka’s dad was a dentist who hated sugary treats of all kinds, although it’s unclear if it’s hot. It’s also unclear if other familiar characters, such as worker Oompa Loompas, who would later keep his factory filled with candy, will make an appearance in the film.
There’s a fair amount of content in the works right now that focuses on the curious and eccentric candyman. Netflix has two animated series in development based on the candy world popularized by Mr. Wonka. Taika Waititi, who directed “Thor: Ragnarok,” “Jojo Rabbit,” and the upcoming “Thor: Love and Thunder,” writes, directs and produces both Netflix projects.
