Windows 10 cumulative update KB5000842 fixes freezing issues

Microsoft has released the non-security preview update KB5000842 for all editions of Windows 10, version 20H2 and Windows 10, version 2004, with fixes for system freeze and activation issues.

After you install this cumulative update, you may experience issues with the system and lost user certificates when updating from Windows 10 1809 or later versions using outdated installation media.

Highlights of the KB5000842 update

With the monthly preview update to KB5000842, Microsoft addresses an issue that could prevent systems running Windows 10 2004 from responding during hybrid shutdowns.

This cumulative update also fixes bugs that cause devices to stop functioning and generate error codes 0xC9, as well as a heap leak that causes high memory consumption in explorer.exe.

Microsoft also fixed a Windows activation issue affecting Windows 10, version 2004 systems after installing last month’s preview update KB4598291 that fixed device deactivation and freezing issues.

Finally, the update removes the unsupported Microsoft Edge Legacy and installs the new Microsoft Edge. Microsoft announced last month that Windows 10 April Updates will permanently remove Edge Legacy.

Other highlights included in this update:

• We fixed an issue that could prevent the cluster network interface from functioning for a short time. Therefore, the network interface controller (NIC) is marked as failed. When the network is operational again, the system may not detect that the network card is working and the network card remains in a failed state.

• Addresses an issue that prevents a system from functioning when no Trusted Platform Module (TPM) is present in the system. The error code in TpmTasks.dll! TrackTPMStateChanges is c0000005.

• Notifies users when a child account of the Family Safety plan has administrative privileges.

• Updates an issue that prevents a device from working if you delete files or folders synced by OneDrive.

• Addresses an issue that may prevent File Explorer and other applications from responding for several minutes. This problem occurs after a client reconnects to the corporate network and tries to use mapped drives to access file shares on the corporate network.

What has changed in KB5000842

Windows 10 cumulative update KB5000842 is considered optional and will not be automatically deployed because it is a pre-release update.

To install it manually, you need to go to Settings > Update and security > Windows Update and “Check for updates”. You can then download and install the update by going to the “Optional updates available” area.

The update can also be downloaded manually from the Microsoft catalog. After installation, Windows 10 2004 will be updated to Build 19041.906, while Windows 10 20H2 will be upgraded to Build 19042.906.

Microsoft advises customers who experience “0x800f0823 – CBS_E_NEW_SERVICING_STACK_REQUIRED” errors while installing update KB5000842 to close the message, install the latest standalone SSU (KB4598481), and retry the installation process.

• Addresses a zoom issue that occurs when using Microsoft Edge IE mode on devices that use multiple high-resolution monitors.

• Allows administrators to use Group Policy to enable extended keyboard shortcuts, including Ctrl + S, for users in Microsoft Edge IE mode.

• Addresses an issue that prevents the icon for a Toast collection from appearing in Action Center if the icon file URI contains spaces.

• Addresses an issue that causes High Dynamic Range (HDR) displays to appear much darker than expected.

• Addresses an issue that causes video playback in duplicate mode to become out of sync when using multiple monitors.

• Addresses an issue that could cause applications to stop working when you enter Japanese characters using Microsoft’s Japanese Input Method Editor (IME) in compatibility mode.

• Addresses an issue that prevents users from adjusting or disabling the touchpad due to administrative settings.

• Addresses a window rendering issue that causes window content to frequently flicker when FlipEx is in use.

• Addresses a window rendering issue that causes window content to frequently flash when Multi-Clip Overlay (MPO) is used.

• Addresses an issue with Japanese entry that occurs after switching focus between zones in Microsoft Edge.

• Addresses an issue that displays nothing or displays “Calculation Filters” indefinitely when you filter File Explorer search results.

• Addresses an issue that makes the split layout unavailable for the touch keyboard when you rotate a device in portrait mode.

• Addresses an issue that prevents you from closing Toast notifications using the Close button on touchscreen devices.

• Updates the time zone of Volgograd, Russia from UTC + 4 to UTC + 3.

• Adds a new time zone, UTC + 2: 00 Juba, for the Republic of South Sudan.

• Addresses an issue with the Windows Event Log Transfer Client, which returns the first matching certificate without checking private key permissions. With this update, the Windows event log transfer client selects the client’s certificate only if the network service has Read permissions for the private key.

• Addresses an issue that prevents PowerShell-based monitors from working when you enable transcription on systems.

• Addresses an issue that prevents BranchCache from working if you activate Windows using the Cloud Solution Provider (CSP) license.

• Addresses an issue that prevents Windows 10 Home Edition devices from upgrading to Windows 10 Pro Education edition using mobile device management (MDM) services such as Microsoft Intune.

• Addresses an issue that prevents App-V applications from opening and generates error 0xc0000225.

• Addresses an issue that causes some machines registered with an MDM service to fail to sync if the device manufacturer name contains a reserved character.

• Addresses an issue with using a Configuration Service Provider (CSP) policy to configure a custom setting for auditing other logon / logoff events. The custom setting does not take effect.

• Addresses an issue that results in multiple instances of appidcertstorecheck.exe to run on a system when AppLocker is enabled and the system is not on the Internet.

• Addresses an issue connecting to a device that is in the current domain using the default user profile of a device that is in a different, but trusted domain. The current domain profile service cannot retrieve the default user profile from the trusted domain and instead uses the local default user profile.

• Addresses an issue with assessing the compatibility status of the Windows ecosystem to ensure application and device compatibility for all Windows updates.

• Addresses an issue that prevents users from using Remote Desktop Protocol (RDP) to connect to a Windows Server 2019 device that is in User Experience mode.

• Addresses an issue to allow our enterprise partners to work with the Microsoft Support Program to create custom mitigations.
