Windows May Uninstall Updates That Cause Startup Problems

Microsoft has recently implemented a new troubleshooting step in Windows 10 that improves management of startup issues by the operating system.

Windows 10 can automatically uninstall newly installed operating system updates to resolve boot issues as a last resort if all other steps to resolve the problem fail.

Startup problems are one of the most frustrating problems that Windows users may encounter. One of the big problems of users is that they only have a few options to solve it: using built-in troubleshooting options, tools or recovery disks or restoring system backups, if any.

Updates can be a source of startup problems. Updates can cause blue screens or other startup issues that prevent the system from booting.

Windows 10 can remove the recently installed updates as part of a troubleshooting process to restore the proper boot behavior.

The operating system informs the user of the removal of the updates at the next successful start:

We have removed some recently installed updates to recover your device after a failed boot.

Microsoft notes on a support page that this is done only if all other attempts to recover the startup and system startup process fail.

Updates removed during the process will automatically be blocked for 30 days to prevent the problem from reoccurring. The blocked updates will be downloaded and reinstalled after the 30-day period. This may mean that the problem occurs again if Microsoft has not resolved it within the time limit.

Administrators who want to permanently block the update can use the Microsoft Updates Lock Tool to do this.

Auto recovery is excellent if it works and the new update removal option is certainly a welcome addition to the auto recovery process. The option speeds recovery if it works.

The new option can automatically fix some issues, but it's certainly not a catch-all option to recover any issues with the update.

Administrators should always use advanced troubleshooting tools or recovery images to restore a functioning system if automatic recovery fails.
