A wintry mix of snow and widespread freezing rain is expected to spread across the Midwest and eastern United States on Friday, creating dangerous trips and possible power outages to usher in the new year.
The national meteorological service said the “mighty winter storm” will rise from the southern plains and strike parts of the Mississippi Valley, the Midwest and the Northeast throughout the day.
According to the NWS in Des Moines, parts of southeast Iowa were subject to a winter weather advisory, with 2 to 5 inches of snow expected around Ottumwa.
West in Nebraska, NWS Omaha reported freezing fog and snow and warned of slippery roads.

The NWS has issued winter storm warnings and winter weather advisories in parts of both states.

The ominous weather comes just days after a severe winter storm swept through the U.S. Midwest on Tuesday, canceling hundreds of flights, shutting down coronavirus test sites and creating impossible conditions for drivers.
