Winter Wonderland Creates Dangerous Road Conditions For San Antonio Drivers

SAINT ANTHONY – The town of Alamo turned into a winter wonderland on Monday after snow and ice blanketed the city’s highways and streets overnight.

With snow so rare in our region, some may be taking advantage of the frost. Others who had to maneuver vehicles with ice on the roads were not as amused.

“I just moved here like two months ago,” said Gabriela Yambo, who has left North Carolina. “I grew up in Connecticut, and we really get snow every week.”

Yambo thought she had finally escaped the snow. On Sunday night, however, slippery road conditions intensified as 3.7 inches of snow fell, leaving many roads through San Antonio impassable.

Among the many wrecks, a KSAT crew spotted a stack of several vehicles on a ramp on US 90 near Route 151 on the west side in which at least one semi-trailer jackknifed.

The Texas Department of Transportation closed local highways Sunday night as a precaution.

“We currently have teams trying to target the major highways in Bexar County,” said Laura Lopez, spokesperson for TxDOT.

Lopez said around 40 trucks were spraying brine and rock on highways after plows on Monday.

This unusual winter storm turned out to have a bigger impact than expected.

“I guess it hasn’t happened often, so hopefully it doesn’t happen again,” Yambo said.

By mid-afternoon as of Monday, much of the snow and ice on the city streets had melted into sleet and even water, but with future road conditions still uncertain, TxDOT says it doesn’t reopening of all national roads is not sure.

The City of San Antonio has sent KSAT the following statement:

“Public works are monitoring the roads due to rare winter conditions and snow accumulation. Teams help SAPD by placing barricades on city-maintained bridges and viaducts to prevent drivers from crossing dangerous roads.

As the snow begins to melt, Public Works crews will continue to spread gravel material that helps the vehicle to pull. Some traffic lights are not working due to power outages and we urge residents to avoid driving if possible. “

Bexar County officials said the county facilities would be closed and court proceedings would be canceled on Tuesday.
