A Wisconsin Air National Guard fighter jet crashed Tuesday night in Michigan’s upper peninsula and authorities said they had yet to locate its pilot.

The F-16 plane was part of the Wisconsin Air National Guard Base’s 115th Fighter Wing at Truax Field Air National Guard Base in Madison, according to their website, which confirmed the crash.

“The 115th Fighter Wing participated in a coordinated search effort with local emergency responders, the US Coast Guard and other government agencies overnight,” wrote the 115th Wednesday morning. “Ground, air and water search and rescue efforts continue.”

The 115th Fighter Wing said the only pilot on board was on a routine training mission and crashed around 8 p.m. in Delta County, Michigan.

“We are a close-knit family and when an incident like this occurs every member of our organization feels it,” Col. Bart Van Roo, commander of the 115th Fighter Wing, said in a statement on the 115th Fighter Wing website.

“The safety of our pilot as well as the search and rescue efforts are our top priority, and we will continue to pray for the safe return of the pilot.

The 115th Fighter Wing did not immediately respond to an NBC News request for comment.

NBC affiliate WLUC reported that local emergency responders were initially looking for the pilot, but darkness and poor cell service in the rural area hampered communication efforts overnight.
