Wisconsin couple allowed to keep the pride flag after being threatened with deportation

The Wisconsin couple threatened with eviction for brandishing a gay pride flag in front of their home will not have to withdraw it to continue living on the property.

A letter to Kevin Kollmann and his partner, Merle Malterer, from the owner of the apartment complex in Oak Creeks, Wisconsin, announced that the five-day notice sent to them last week had been canceled, according to NBC News.

"No further action will be taken on your flag, your flag may remain," said the letter.

Kenneth Bieck, managing director of Bieck Management, owner of the apartment complex, also said that he would start discussing how to administer a new policy regarding the laying of flags in the complex.

Kollman told NBC News that they had received Bieck's letter the same day they had written a response to the previous eviction notice they had received. The couple had planned to fight him.

"This really represents a lot for the LGBTQ community," Kollmann told the news network. "Pride and love win every time."

Kollman and Malterer reportedly received an eviction notice in the mail last week leaving them five days to leave their unit if they did not remove their American flag to the gay pride theme of their apartment's patio.

The notification indicated that both had broken their lease by suspending the flag. Kollmann told NBC News that he had complied with a similar request in January after hanging a Green Bay Packers flag.

Kollman and Malterer, who rented a unit at Country Oaks Apartments for six years, told NBC News that it was an example of "selective prosecution".

The two also said that between 10 and 12 other apartments in the complex had flags of American and police-themed flags hanging on their units.

"My flag is not doing anything," said Kollman. "It's just a symbol of who we are, where we come from and our love for the United States."
