Wisconsin firefighter dies after being shot in hospital after medical call, officials say

A Wisconsin firefighter died after being shot dead while responding to an unrelated medical call, in which a police officer was also shot dead, officials said.

A 14-year veteran of the Appleton Fire Department died after being shot in the performance of his duties while he was at the scene of a fire. Medical emergency at the Valley Transit Center in downtown Appleton, about 120 km north of Milwaukee, confirmed the department a statement Thursday.

Police and Appleton firefighters responded to a medical call in the 100 block of East Washington Street around 5:30 pm on Wednesday. Emergency personnel were shot dead in an incident unrelated to the treatment of the injured party.

Four people were affected, including a firefighter and a police officer. They were all transported to a hospital in the area where the unidentified firefighter died later.

A procession was held overnight in Milwaukee, with the victim's body being taken to the Milwaukee County Medical Examiner's office. Firefighters lined the street as rescue vehicles escorted the body. The draped coffin was then taken to the pathologist's office.

Appleton shots revealed that the shot dead policeman was still recovering at the hospital on Thursday.

Fire officials said the funeral arrangements for the firefighter were underway and that the investigation into the incident was ongoing.

The Green Bay Police Service is investigating Wednesday's shootings.
