MILWAUKEE – – Justin Lewis scored 18 points and converted a rebound on a missed free throw to the buzzer as Marquette knocked out Wisconsin No.4 67-65 on Friday night.
DJ Carton de Marquette was just inside the 3-point arc when he caught a foul from Wisconsin’s D’Mitrik Trice with nine tenths of a second left. Carton made the first free throw and his second attempt bounced off the edge.
Lewis walked into the paint and patted the ball with his right hand. The freshman’s shot hit the front of the rim and left the front panel to follow the basket to win the game as his teammates assaulted him under the basket.
The game marked the most exciting of 127 encounters between the two enemies in the state, whose campuses are roughly 120 km apart, although the lack of spectators at the Fiserv Forum due to the pandemic gave the last edition from rivalry a different feeling.
Marquette (3-1) earned her first victory over a top-five team since defeating Villanova 74-72 on January 24, 2017. The Golden Eagles also broke Wisconsin’s 11-game winning streak, which started at the end of last season.
The header has changed hands six times in the last 70 seconds, and neither team has led by more than six points.
Marquette was narrowly in the lead for most of the second half before Trice made two free throws with two minutes remaining. The lead was going back and forth from there before the frenzied final streak.
Trice led Wisconsin (3-1) with 17 points, while Jonathan Davis scored 12 and Nate Reuvers added 11.
Lewis had eight rebounds to go along with his 18 points. Carton scored 12 and Jamal Cain added 10.

Wisconsin: After beating three clearly inferior opponents by an average margin of 28 points to start the year, the Badgers faced their biggest challenge of the young season and failed the test. A potential home game against Louisville on Wednesday, assuming it goes as planned, could reveal all the Badgers have learned from that loss.
Marquette: The Golden Eagles rebounded in a big way from a 70-62 home loss to Oklahoma State in which they committed 24 turnovers and wasted a 17-4 lead. This game should give some confidence to a team learning to play without All-America guard Markus Howard, who led the country with 27.8 points per game last season and ended his college career as the top scorer in all-time Golden Eagles.
SURVEY IMPLICATIONS
This loss will likely cause Wisconsin to fall to the bottom of the top 10 or just outside. This is Wisconsin’s highest ranking since reaching third place on March 16, 2015.
