MADISON, Wisconsin (AP) – Health authorities in Wisconsin have announced that a child has died of flu.

The Department of Health Services said the death had occurred in southeastern Wisconsin, but had refused to identify the child. Since October, there have been 13 influenza-related deaths, but this is the first case in pediatrics.

Lyn Ranta, a physician at the Wisconsin Children's Hospital, says the death of the child shows how severe the flu can be and how important it is to take action to protect children. Ranta says it's not too late in the flu season for a vaccination.
