The Seahawks have officially hired Shane Waldron and Andy Dickerson as their offensive coordinator and play coordinator, respectively, and now a big question is what happens with the Seattle fullback in 2021.

Bumpus: Hawks adding two Rams coaches goes in the right direction

The Seahawks ran the ball more in the second half of the 2020 season after showing more football in the first eight games, but they still only finished 17th in rushing attempts while still placing 12th in the overalls. rushing yards.

Now the Seahawks are entering the offseason without a clear lead as Chris Carson, Seattle’s top rusher over the past two seasons, hits unrestricted free agency.

Former NFL quarterback Jake Heaps 710 ESPN Seattle’s Jake and Stacy were previously optimistic about Seattle’s chances of bringing Carson back next season, but he’s not so confident anymore.

“We’ll see if they can perform a miracle, but I highly, highly doubt it,” Heaps said on Friday.

If Carson doesn’t return to Seattle and the Seahawks don’t sign a proven lead, it could lead the team to adopt a committee return approach. Seattle currently has three running backs on the roster in 2018, Rashaad Penny, 2020 rookie DeeJay Dallas and Travis Homer, who will be a third-year pro. But in 2020, those three combined for just 70 carries for 230 yards.

Whether the Seahawks go for a committee approach with those three or one back in the mix, Heaps believes Seattle should still be able to lead the ball effectively thanks to the hires of Waldron and Dickerson.

“The only thing that gives me great confidence is if you look at this last year and what the Rams were able to do, they had three guys averaging over 4 yards per carry,” he said. .

The Rams’ top rusher in 2020 was rookie Cam Akers, who finished with 625 yards and 4.3 yards per carry. Second-year fullback Darrell Henderson rushed for 624 yards on 4.5 yards per carry while veteran Malcom Brown rushed for 419 yards on 4.1 yards per carry.

“It tells me it’s the system,” Heaps said. “The system is a good system, and it’s not that you can just plug in and play, but you are able to find a way to get those three backs and opportunities to be successful.

Heaps said quarterback Russell Wilson, who was Seattle’s second leading player in 2020 with 513 yards, could also help the Seahawks’ running game just by scrambling. With Wilson and some solid running backs, Heaps believes the Seahawks and new offensive coaches should be able to do well on the pitch next season.

“I think Shane Waldron and this group can now have an effective committee backtracking approach, and they’re (probably) going to have to,” he said.
