With no alternative PS5 colors at launch, users are customizing their own consoles

The PlayStation 5 comes in a single color scheme at launch, and its white exterior isn’t to everyone’s liking.

When asked this month if the PS5 would be available in other color schemes, Sony would only say there won’t be any additional colors or designs at launch.

While it seems very likely that new PS5 colors will be released at some point, with no official alternatives currently available, users hoping for a different look in the near term need to get creative.

As spotted by GamesRadar, one Reddit user used Plastidip to turn their PS5 into a black console (above). Plastidip is described as “a protective rubberized coating which can be sprayed, painted or dipped on a wide range of materials, including metal”.

Another PS5 owner (below) used vinyl wrap to change the look of their console. Vinyl wrap is more traditionally used to protect a car’s paintwork and provide customization options.

A peripherals company selling custom PS5 faceplates was recently forced to cancel all of its orders and withdraw the products from sale, following a lawsuit reported by Sony.

PlateStation5.com had previously been forced to change its name to CustomizeMyPlates.com following a Sony complaint, before being hit by subsequent legal threats that led it to cease selling the product altogether.

The PS5 launched Thursday in the United States, Japan, Canada, Mexico, Australia, New Zealand and South Korea, with most other countries around the world receiving the console on November 19.

“Whether you like it or not, the PS5 will instantly become the centerpiece of your living room, its white faceplates barely squeezing into a standard TV cabinet,” one reads in VGC’s PS5 launch review.

“It looks slightly better placed vertically – if only because it doesn’t fall off the fragile mount every time you touch it – but there’s no denying that any future hardware iteration will have a lot of work to do to it. make the PS5 more attractive. “

In a PS5 FAQ posted last week, Sony confirmed that more DualSense controller colors would be released “in the future” although it added that there were no announcements to share at this time.
