By retiring yesterday, Philip Rivers ended his streak of 240 consecutive games started, and 252 including the playoffs. It was the longest active streak in the NFL and the second longest streak in NFL history.

With Rivers retiring, Russell Wilson now has the longest active streak of straight starts by a quarterback, at 144 games and 160 including the playoffs.

To give an idea of how unlikely someone is to break Brett Favre’s all-time record, consider this: Wilson has the longest active streak, but he’s not even halfway through the record. Favre of 297 consecutive starts (321 qualifiers counted).

When Buccaneers quarterback Tom Brady wins the NFC Championship game, it will be his 89th straight start. It is the second longest active streak in the NFL. Including the playoffs, Brady has three of the 18 longest straight streaks started in NFL history. Brady started 128 straight games from his first start as a substitute for Drew Bledsoe until his knee injury in 2008. Then Brady started 126 straight games from his return from that knee injury until his Deflategate 2016 suspension. And now Brady is 88 straight starts.

With the NFL planning to move up to 17 game seasons, it will be a little easier for a quarterback to catch up with Favre. But even at 17 regular season games a year, Wilson is nine years away from equalizing Favre.
