Derion Kendrick is an explosive playmaker
On Wednesday, Clemson's head coach Dabo Swinney will treat wide receiver injury Amari RodgersWe will all discover the extent of Rodgers' leg injury and whether the team's doctors have the feeling that Rodgers could make his appearance at some point during the 2019 season.
If Rodgers is short of time due to injury – and is expected to do so – coaching staff will need to develop a Plan B to attempt to replace a projected starter in a wide receiver group and talented.
Rodgers was fired from training ground on Monday after being injured, and an MRI Tuesday confirmed the damage to his ACL.
During the 2018 season, the other receivers Tee Higgins, Justyn Ross, and Hunter Renfrow is the subject of most headlines, but Rodgers has quietly prepared for a strong season. He was second on the team with 55 receptions after starting the 15 games wide receiver. He recorded 575 yards and scored four touchdowns in the historic Tigers season (15-0).
He caught five passes for a total of 73 yards at Texas A & M and recorded six receptions in a career-high 60-yard career at Georgia Tech. Rodgers had his best game of the season in Clemson's win at Florida St. when he won the offensive game title after posting career highs in yards (156) and touchdowns (two ) at six receptions.
He had 58 and 68-yard touchdowns against the Seminoles and became the first Clemson player to capture two touchdowns of more than 50 yards in a single game since Artavis Scott against South Carolina in 2014, becoming the first Clemson player since 1950 to accomplish this feat on the road.
Rodgers also brought stability to the attack kick return game, returning 39 shots for an average of 7.7 yards with a touchdown.
In spring training, Rodgers moved from the receiver's location to Hunter Renfrow's spot. The loss of Rodgers opens the door to an explosive game maker Derion Kendrick, Diondre OvertonTJ Chase and Cornell Powell. Kendrick spent his time in the spring working as a cornerback, but may well return to the offensive with the loss of Rodgers. Kendrick will probably also take over the punt return tasks. Kendrick played 283 offensive plays in 15 games as a rookie in 2018, scoring 15 passes for 210 yards and giving 13 punts an average of 23.0 yards.
Powell was redshirt last season, but enters 2019 with 25 receptions for 207 yards and a touchdown in 369 shots in 27 losses in 27 career games. Powell also recorded seven kickoff returns for 182 yards before the 2019 campaign.
Overton has worked at outside receiver positions but will not begin the cross training process in the slot. He has made 30 career receptions for a total of 425 yards in the first two seasons of his career. A change to the slot could offer match opportunities for the offensive because of its size (6-4, 210).
Another player to watch is Chase, who has 18 shots in 29 career games. The junior redshirt may be elusive on the field, but older and more experienced players have blocked the passage.
For now, though, expect Kendrick to be the first and longest to replace Rodgers.
