Trevor Siemian He will have an MRI on his ankle Tuesday morning, but the injury was not very good. Sam Darnold has already been released with mono, perhaps until the end of October. It leaves Luke Falk, who made his NFL debut on Monday night, as the only quarterback on the list.
So yes, the Jets need help at the shift and they need it quickly.
Unfortunately, quarterbacks are not easy to find.
It almost certainly means that Falk, aged 24, will start for the New England Jets on Sunday and that he may well be the starter in the foreseeable future. The Jets will have a week off after the Patriots game, which could give them a chance to re-evaluate their options. But there will not be many. And most of them are not good.
Here are some names on the market that could constitute short-term solutions if it turns out that Siemian has been away for a while and the Jets still do not know when Darnold will be back:
Brock Osweiler
The 6-foot-7 veteran has a long history with Gase, who was part of the Denver Broncos staff when they selected him in the second round of the 2012 draft. They were also reunited last season in Miami, where Osweiler played five games with the Gase Dolphins. Of course he was not particularly good (63%, 1,247 yards, six touchdowns and four interceptions). But at least he knows about Gase's offense.
Davis Webb
The former apparent heir Eli Manning was with the Jets this summer, but was beaten for third string work by Falk. He is now in the Buffalo Bills training squad, but he could be ripped off as easily. He has never played in an NFL game, but again, he knows about Gase's offense, at least a little bit.
Cody Kessler
He was a good starter when he was with the Browns in 2016, and again with the Jaguars for four games last season. He was fighting for the substitute position in Philadelphia this summer until he suffered a concussion in the second pre-season game. If he is healthy, the 26-year-old could survive a few weeks at the Jets.
Sam Bradford
The former number one choice, aged 31, is over, but the Jets could do a lot more to get it through until Darnold returns. Bradford has 83 starts to his credit and was great just three years ago as a starter in Minnesota. He lost his job at the choice of first round Josh Rosen in Arizona last year. Injuries are his main problem, but Jets only need a few weeks.
Jay Cutler
Gase drew the former Chicago Bear player out of retirement in 2017, when he played 14 games and presented a decent performance. At the end of the season, Cutler did not officially retire and said he would consider playing again if he was offered a first job. It was two years ago and he is 36, but we are living in a desperate time.
