With Windows 10 1809, Microsoft removes the safe removal of USB keys as a default option

To safely delete or not delete safely? That's the question … although another may reasonably be: "Well, what difference does it really make?" Since the arrival of USB sticks, we have been warned that they must be "safely removed" using the appropriate method under Windows, rather than simply being removed – but that changes.

With Windows 10 1809, Microsoft changes the default setting for USB flash drives and other removable media. This change means that the default policy applied to removable storage devices is quick removal rather than performance improvement. So you can remove it without further delay.

The change comes with the implementation of the October 2018 update and Microsoft explains the following: "Windows defines two main strategies, Quick withdrawal and Best performance, which control the interaction of the system with external storage devices such as USB sticks or Thunderbolt-compatible external drives. Starting with Windows 10 version 1809, the default policy is Quick withdrawal. ".

When the "Quick Withdraw" option is enabled, it is not necessary to use the Safely Remove Hardware process, but performance may drop.

If you prefer to use the Best Performance option, which can be enabled and disabled device by device, Microsoft explains how to enable it:

  1. Connect the device to the computer.
  2. Right click beginning, then select File Explorer.
  3. In the File Explorer, identify the letter or tag associated with the device (for example, USB stick (D 🙂).
  4. Right click beginning, then select Disk Management.
  5. In the lower part of the Disk Management window, right-click the device label, and then click properties.
  6. To select policiesand select the strategy you want to use.

Microsoft suggests that if you select the "Best Performance" option, you must also select "Enable write caching on the device." The company also notes:

If you use the "Best Performance" policy, you must use the Safely Remove Hardware process to remove the device. If you remove or disconnect the device without following the safe removal instructions, you may lose data.
