MOAB, Utah – Moab Police released details of a report they wrote last month regarding missing woman Gabby Petito and boyfriend Brian Laundrie.

The incident was described by police as a “mental health crisis”, and no charges were laid against either.

According to the police report, the incident was reported on Aug. 12 at 4:30 p.m. near a convenience store at 39 East 100 North in Moab in which “the man and woman had engaged in some sort of altercation.” Police investigated the incident as disorderly conduct.

A witness reported to police “seeing a man, later identified as Brian Laundrie, and a woman, later identified as Gabrielle Petito, arguing over the phone.” The witness also said: “When Brian got into the van he saw what appeared to him as Gabrielle hitting Brian in the arm and then climbing through the driver’s window as if Brian had locked her in and was trying. to find a way in. “

Moab police have stopped the couple’s van at Arches National Park.

Officer Daniel Robbins wrote in the report: “Gabrielle, who was in the passenger seat, was crying uncontrollably. Robbins said Petito told him that she had a fight with Brian that day and that she was “struggling with her sanity”.

Laundrie told the officer the couple had quarreled “more than usual” and their relationship had been strained recently after “traveling together for the past 4 or 5 months.” Laundrie also told police that they were both struggling with an unspecified medical or emotional issue.

“While arguing near Main Street, he had tried to part ways with her so they could both calm their emotions,” Constable Robbins wrote in the police report. “He got into their van and Gabrielle had fallen into a manic state. Brian said Gabrielle, thinking he was going to leave her in Moab without a trick, went to slap him. As Gabrielle began to sway, Brian pushed her back to avoid the slap.

Police said the laundry had “a few minor visible scratches.”

“After assessing all of the circumstances,” Constable Robbins wrote, “I don’t think the situation escalated to a domestic assault as much as a mental health crisis. I then determined that the most appropriate course of action would be to help separate the parties for the night so that they can reset their mental states without interference from each other.

Another officer, Eric Pratt, wrote that the couple “said they were in love and engaged and they did not desperately want to see anyone charged with a crime”.

Officer Robbins said Petito took the van while Laundrie had a hotel room for the night.

“I asked Brian and Gabrielle to use this time apart to relax their emotions and regain control of their anxiety,” Constable Robbins wrote.

According to the report obtained by FOX 13 News, officers asked Gabby Petito and Brian Laundrie to go their separate ways for the night “and get their anxiety back under control.”

Petito was reported missing on September 11 by his mother when Gabby failed to register for several days. The Florida couple were traveling in a converted van on tour of national parks.

Gabby’s Instagram posts show the couple were in Utah for several weeks. Gabby’s last physical sighting was at a Salt Lake City hotel and her last Instagram post was taken in Ogden, Utah on August 25. The couple then reportedly traveled to Grand Teton National Park in Wyoming, which is the last place Gabby’s mother said he heard from her daughter.

Brian Laundrie, her boyfriend, returned home to North Port Florida on September 1, alone, with the van the couple were traveling in.

Police did not charge Laundrie with any crime but named him a “person of interest” because he did not cooperate with investigators.

Gabby’s family are said to have organized a search in Wyoming.
