Kevin Durant is a member of the Brooklyn Nets. During his trip east, he apparently decided not only to leave the Golden State Warriors, but also to change numbers.
Throughout his career – first with the Seattle SuperSonics, then with the Oklahoma City Thunder and finally with the Warriors – Durant wore the number 35. But according to a post on Durant's Twitter page on Sunday , everything is finished.
When Durant speaks for the Nets, whether it's next season or 2020-2021, he seems to be number 7.
Via Twitter:
It's all a reversal. Durant has not only worn 35 years: his Twitter account, his number is indicated, and his company 35 Ventures owes its name.
Why does Durant change the numbers now? It's hard to say. Even in the release on the number change, Durant did not give more information to help us.
Of course, Durant has been seen wearing a hat with a "7" on the front during these last play-offs, so naturally, people draw their own conclusions as to whether it will last a long time.
This is a new chapter for Durant, so maybe he wants to try to reshape the marketing around the previous iteration of his public character? We saw LeBron James move from No. 23 to No. 6 with success when playing with the Miami Heat, marking a change from his past Cleveland Cavalier. Michael Jordan is famous for returning to the Chicago Bulls number 45 in 1995. Changes in numbers can be trivial or calculated, and it's not so strange for a star player to change that.
Other examples of this did not work as well. Kobe Bryant went from No. 8 to No. 24 for the 2006-07 season, just months after settling his sexual assault case in Colorado in March of that year. He was seen as Bryant trying to control the marketing narrative around him.
Regardless of Durant's motives, he's going to sell a ton of jerseys – especially those from Nets Coogi – and the number does not matter.
During, the Warriors will withdraw his 35 soldiers here soon enough. Maybe he will be able to dominate the Eastern Conference enough to get his 7 retirees to Barclays Center?
Only time will tell.
