News of the sale was first reported by The Atlanta Journal-Constitution.
Loeffler, who lost to Rev. Raphael Warnock in Georgia’s historic Senate second round earlier this month, is a Republican who has already sparked controversy in the WNBA by saying she does not support the Black Lives Matter movement. . She also called for the depoliticization of professional sport.

Warnock is due to be sworn in as a US Senator on Wednesday.

“Regarding the Atlanta dream, we understand that a sale of the franchise is about to be finalized,” a WNBA spokesperson told CNN in an email. “Once the sale negotiation is concluded, additional information will be provided.”

The Atlanta Dream did not comment, according to a spokesperson for the team. CNN has also contacted representatives for Loeffler, but has not received a response.

Last summer, Dream players released a signed unified statement – despite Loeffler’s objection – claiming they support the Black Lives Matter movement.

Despite the pressure to sell her share in the squad, Loeffler has refused to do so in the past, which has encouraged WNBA players to campaign against her. Several Atlanta Dream players were pictured wearing “Vote Warnock” shirts in the days leading up to the election earlier this month.

Warnock’s victory means he became Georgia’s first black US senator. He was also the first Georgia Democrat elected to the US Senate in over 20 years.
NBA Superstar LeBron James tweeted on January 6 that he was considering forming an ownership group to purchase the Dream.
