It has been interesting to watch Michigan football bolster its defensive staff and for the second time a favorite for a job goes elsewhere.
Michigan football head coach Jim Harbaugh has his new defensive coordinator and, according to Monday’s reports, a new safety coach. But there is still work to be done.
Harbaugh announced Mike Macdonald as defensive coordinator on Sunday and Monday night, according to multiple reports the Wolverines will also be hiring George Helow, who spent the last season coaching linebackers and special teams for Maryland.
However, Helow has a solid resume and began her coaching career under Nick Saban and eventually became the safety coach at Colorado State before moving to Maryland last year.
Helow also has a connection to Macdonald, the new defensive coordinator, which is another reason it makes sense for Michigan football.
Other positions being decided
But there are still openings to fill in the defensive staff and according to Athletic’s Jeff Zrebiec, Ravens secondary coach Jesse Minter will not be coming to Michigan to coach the turns. Instead, he’ll go to Vanderbilt as the defensive coordinator.
Michigan Insider’s Sam Webb ($) has also confirmed Michigan Football won’t be hiring Christian Robinson outside of Florida. The Gators were able to keep it. It could mean that Brian Jean-Mary is back in the fold but it doesn’t seem like a certainty yet.
Basically Macdonald needs a cornerback coach and with Will Johnson, a five-star cornerback rookie in 2022, who could make a decision pretty quickly, a dynamic new hire is essential.
The ideal name is Steve Clinkscale from Kentucky.
Clinkscale would be a great location for the Wolverines. He coached in Kentucky as a defensive backs coach and moved there after a stint in Cincinnati, including a season as DC.
Not only is he known as a very good trainer, but Clinkscale hails from Youngstown, Ohio and has worked in Toledo as well as Cincinnati. In terms of recruiting, it couldn’t be better for Michigan football which needs to increase its presence in Ohio.
Clinkscale is also the type of hire that should be viewed favorably by rookies like Johnson, however, he’s not the only candidate and like Florida did with Robinson, Kentucky won’t let him go without a fight. .
Whatever happens, Michigan needs to finalize staff quickly, and then they need to get down to business on the transfer portal list.
