SAN DIEGO (KUSI) – Authorities on Wednesday publicly identified a mother and child who died last weekend in a fall from a third floor hall in Petco Park just before a San Diego Padres game.
Raquel Wilkins, 40, and Denzel Browning-Wilkins, 2, died shortly before 4 p.m. Saturday on the sidewalk where they landed in the 200 bock at Tony Gwynn Way on the west side of the downtown stadium, according to the police.
How the San Diego woman and her toddler were able to dive from the edge of the stadium remains unclear.
“The deaths of the victims seemed suspicious and, out of caution, the San Diego Police Homicide Unit was called to the scene,” Lt. Andra Brown said Wednesday afternoon. “The investigation is ongoing and detectives are still interviewing witnesses and trying to find evidence.”
Wilkins and his child were in a food court and concession area when they fell, police said.
“How and why this happened are questions of concern to many, especially investigators looking for answers in this heartbreaking case. … Due to the large crowd present at the time of the incident, the detectives interviewed many witnesses, and others showed up, ”said the lieutenant.
Witnesses told multiple media outlets that the woman climbed onto a picnic bench in the lobby and fell to the ground, then climbed back onto the bench soon after with her child and fell again, this time by above the balustrade.
Anyone with information about the case is asked to call San Diego County Crime Stoppers at 888-580-8477 or contact the agency online at sdcrimestoppers.org. Tipsters can remain anonymous.
