A California woman discovered a 4.38-carat yellow diamond in Arkansas’ Crater of Diamonds State Park in September, the state’s parks department said.
Noreen Wredberg of Granite Bay, Calif., Was visiting Hot Springs National Park in Arkansas with her husband, Michael, when she decided to stop by the Crater of Diamonds.
“I first saw the park on a TV show several years ago,” Wredberg told the parks department. “When I realized we weren’t very far, I knew we had to come!
She and her husband visited the park on September 23, days after an inch of rain fell on the park, creating perfect conditions for diamond hunting.
“The ground had dried up a bit and the sun was shining when Mrs. Wredberg visited him two days later. She was just in the right place to see her diamond sparkle in the morning sun, ”park interpreter Waymon Cox said in a statement.
Wredberg had only been looking for about an hour when she spotted the massive gem.
“I didn’t know it was a diamond at the time, but it was clean and shiny, so I picked it up! ” she said.
Arkansas is the only state to have a public diamond mine. When visitors find a diamond, they bring it to the park’s Diamond Discovery Center, which confirmed that Wredberg’s jelly bean-sized rock was indeed a diamond. The park said it was the largest diamond found in the park in the past year.
Wredberg is keeping her gem and doesn’t know what to do with it yet.
Over 75,000 diamonds have been discovered at Diamond Crater since 1906.
