According to the New Mexico Department of Health, this is one of four West Nile cases in Bernalillo County this year.

West Nile virus is most commonly transmitted to humans through the bite of an infected mosquito. There are no vaccines or drugs to prevent or treat West Nile virus.

"This year has been particularly intense for mosquitoes," said Dr. Mark DiMenna, deputy director of the Environmental Health Department of the City of Albuquerque. "There is still a record number of mosquitoes in the area, and precautions to reduce the risks are strongly recommended."

The name of the woman has not been published.
