Woman infected with flesh-eating bacteria on Norfolk Beach

NORFOLK, Va. – Amanda Edwards may be laughing today, thinking of her potentially fatal fear of health after spending only ten minutes in the water on a Virginia beach.

"I was just like: 'Oh my God … my leg will fall,'" Edwards laughs. "It's the only thing I can continue to think about."

She told WTKR that she had a staph infection that was feeding on flesh during a day of entertainment at Norfolk's Ocean View Beach. She said that the infection spread quickly.

"The way it spread was getting on my leg," said Edwards.

It happened last week.

"It was really hot. Let's go to the beach. So we went outside to the beach. I only stayed in the water for about 10 minutes, "she explained.

The next day, the pleasure was over.

"I did not feel well. I noticed this thing that came on my leg. I ignored her for a few days and she started getting bigger and bigger so she could not walk, "she explained.

She said the doctors had treated the infection and that the bacteria had probably penetrated her skin through an open cut.

"They had to open it, drain it and stuff it with gauze. I had to keep it covered for days, "said Edwards, who was at the beach with friends.

It was at the time there was a swimming notice.

"Please check the news and make sure there's no notice because there were no signs out there," Edwards said.

The Norfolk Department of Health has told us that germs can enter the water in a variety of ways, such as cleaning swimmers' bodies or relieving themselves.

Health officials urge swimmers not to swallow water and to bathe after a heavy rain. Do not swim if you are sick or if your immune system is weak and away from fishing piers, pipes, drains and water flowing from storm sewers to the beach.

As for Edwards, she said she was taking a break before slipping away for the rest of the summer.

"Every time I go in the water, I will think about this bad experience."

Edwards must continue taking antibiotics for the next two weeks.

When you go out of the water, health officials advise you to shower with soap.
