COLLEGE PARK, MD. – The Minnesota women's basketball team seemed to want to extend their winning streak to seven for 39 minutes Thursday in Maryland, No. 8.
Then come the last 60 seconds.
Maryland scored the last nine points of a 71-69 victory over the Gophers, including Kaila Charles for a volley with less than a second left, which denied coach Lindsay Whalen the victory over one of his former university coaches.
Destiny Pitts scored 24 points and Kenisha Bell added 23 for the Gophers (19-8, 8-8 Big Ten), who lost for the first time since January 28th.
Charles had 29 points for Maryland (24-3, 13-3), which had taken a share of the Big Ten leader with a defeat to Iowa on Sunday.
It was the first coaching match between Whalen and Brenda Frese of Maryland. Whalen was named player of the year 2001-02 best player of the year under the colors of Frese (then known as Brenda Oldfield), who turned the Golden Gophers into Maryland in one year.
Minnesota was never trailed in the first half and produced a 13-3 record at the end of the second quarter to create a 14-point advantage. Maryland, however, reduced its deficit to 45-36 on the 3-pointer flying to Taylor Mikesell's ring.
The Terps did not make a sustained push until the fourth quarter, although Minnesota got a response the first two times Maryland closed in five. After putting Charles on hold with 50.2 seconds left to score 69-64, Pitts made an offensive foul in the backcourt. Stephanie Jones' three-pointer moments eventually drew Maryland's out of two offense, and the Terps took possession of the ball with 26.1 seconds remaining after the draw.
Charles tied the game with 6.6 seconds and, after a timeout, Jasmine Brunson's pass was tipped. Charles picked it up in the middle of the field and joined the winning basket, giving Maryland its only lead of the night.
