Wonder Woman 1984 Shield Absence Explained – / Movie

Wonder Woman 1984 shield

In the midst of all the nonsense and shenanigans that take place during Wonder Woman 1984, I totally missed the fact that Gal gadot‘s Wonder Woman never once uses her iconic shield or sword – two things she used in the first film. She uses her magic lasso a lot, but the shield / sword combo never spawns. Like everything in the movies, it was a deliberate choice, and the star Gal gadot revealed why the Patty jenkinsThe directed sequel canceled Wonder Woman’s weapons.

While i was watching Wonder Woman 1984I kept thinking, “Wow, that’s not good.” I also kept thinking, “Wow, Wonder Woman uses her lasso a lot in this film. Much more than the first film. I was so distracted by the profuse use of the lasso that I completely missed that Gal Gadot’s Diana Prince / Wonder Woman never once used her famous sword and shield – two things she used in The first movie. The shield was particularly iconic in this first film, with Wonder Woman using it in the fantastic No Man’s Land scene.

So, what happened? Did Diana take out the sword and shield in a deleted scene? Apparently not. Speaking with CBR, Wonder Woman herself, Gal Gadot, revealed that the lack of a sword and shield was meant to mean Wonder Woman doesn’t want to be a fighter anymore – she wants to be a peacekeeper. “That’s part of the reason we decided she shouldn’t have a sword or a shield,” Gadot said. “Diana is not aggressive. She’s not here to fight. She is a peacemaker. In addition, she understands better that people are not inherently bad… We are all the same.

I actually think that element is one of the main reasons the film doesn’t work: it’s very naive. Wonder Woman 1984 works under the optimistic assumption that deep down, people are really good. And I’m sorry but… that’s not true. At all. And while I appreciate the idea of an optimistic superhero movie, the optimism Wonder Woman 1984 it’s just a little too much.

Either way, Wonder Woman used her sword and shield in both Batman vs. Superman and Justice League, two films taking place after Wonder Woman 1984, so at some point, the character decides to take them back. Will we ever have an explanation for this, maybe in Wonder woman 3? Or will it just remain indiscriminate? I guess it will be the latter unless there is a scene in the next Snyder Cut of Justice League where Diana talks again about using her weapons.
