Acer introduced this week its brand new ConceptD that will be used to market computers and other equipment designed primarily for content creators and engineers. The initial product family includes high-end workstations for desktop and mobile computers, professional displays and an AR / VR headset.
Maximum performance
Because of Predator Engineering's technical prowess, Acer has become one of the world's largest suppliers of desktop PCs and gaming laptops in recent years. The company, who certainly knows how to build high-performance PCs, has long been looking for professional solutions with its Veriton desktops and ProDesigner displays. However, Acer has not directly addressed the desktop market with all the firearms and ammunition it has. This week, the company rolled out its ConceptD product line including:
- Two desk workstations,
- Three mobile workstations,
- Two professional monitors,
- and a Windows headset in mixed reality.
All new ConceptD products include many pages of the Acer Predator book on cooling, internal architecture, ergonomics, and more. Meanwhile, as these are workstations intended primarily for architects, animators, graphic designers, engineers, filmmakers, product designers, visual effects specialists, etc., stability and reliability are the cornerstones of these PCs.
Note: We will cover in more detail the flagship offers of Acer ConceptD in the coming days.
The offices
The ConceptD desktop portfolio includes the Intel Core i9-9900K-based ConceptD 500 with up to 64 GB of DDR4, as well as the Concept D 900 workstation powered by two Intel Xeon Gold 6148 processors and up to 192 GB DDR4 . It's quite surprising to see anyone trying to enter the dual processor workstation market, which is lucrative, but small enough nowadays, but that's exactly what Acer does.
Both computers use NVIDIA Quadro RTX 4000 or Quadro RTX 6000 professional graphics and provide the features and expandability that can be expected from desktops for creators and content engineers. Quadro RTX graphics cards have been certified by the leading developers of professional applications. The new machines are therefore ready for use.
Laptops
The range of ConceptD mobile workstations includes three machines. In addition to performance, the main feature of Acer mobile workstations is the color accuracy of their IPS displays with a resolution of 3840×2160. All screens are Pantone validated and factory calibrated for the Adobe RGB color gamut.
The Intel Kaby Lake-G Core i7-based 15.6-inch ConceptD 5 with AMD's Radeon RX Vega M GL is the slimmest and lightest family-friendly card for people on the go. Given the positioning, this PC is equipped with a Windows Hello certified fingerprint reader and a TPM module.
The 15.6-inch ConceptD 7 is equipped with the Intel 9 processorth Gen Core i7 processor with NVIDIA Quadro RTX 2080 GPU in Max-Q configuration, offering a balance of performance, power consumption and portability (the notebook weighs 2.1 kilograms).
Acer's high-end mobile workstation is the 17.3-inch Convertible ConceptD 9.th Gen Core i9 (something tells me we're dealing with a six- or eight-core variant) and NVIDIA's GeForce RTX 2080, but the latter is not subject to any Max-Q limitation, but at the cost of a extra weight and a bulky chassis.
Displays
The ConceptD family of monitors currently includes two screens of the most common sizes: the 27-inch CP7271K and the 32-inch CM7321K. Both LCDs are Pantone enabled and factory calibrated to Delta E <1 color accuracy. In addition, both carry the VESA DisplayHDR 1000 badge, providing a maximum brightness of 1000 nits and supporting at least one HDR transport.
The smaller, 27-inch CP7271K is a 4K display with a refresh rate of 144Hz and NVIDIA G-Sync Ultimate technology. It is one of the first professional monitors in the world to offer a refresh rate of 144 Hz and is therefore suitable for creating appropriate content.
The larger, 32-inch CM7321K is a 4K LCD that uses FALD based mini-LED backlighting with 1152 local dimming areas to provide optimal contrast ratio. Intended primarily for DCC specialists, the monitor covers 89.5% of the Rec.2020 color space.
Helmet
The Acer Acer ConceptD Ojo Windows Mixed Reality is another 4K head-up display designed primarily for professionals. The HMD features two 2.89-inch displays with 2160 × 2160 resolution per eye (combined resolution of 4320 × 2160), a refresh rate of 90 Hz, and an unknown field of view. The AR / VR helmet has an integrated position tracking with 6 degrees of freedom (6 degrees of freedom) and therefore does not require any external sensor. In addition, it also has its own headphones and two front cameras to enable augmented reality applications.
The device will come with Acer motion controllers that the company has yet to describe in detail.

More soon
With five workstations, two professional displays and a headset announced this week, it's clear that Acer really wants to (re) enter this market. The company said during the presentation that more ConceptID products are coming. Given that Acer has dared to enter a highly specialized market of dual-processor workstations, dominated by Dell, HP and Lenovo, it is highly likely that the company will also attempt to take over other markets niche.
