This week, OnePlus admitted to having limited 300 of the most popular apps from the Play Store on its latest flagships. The company claimed it was an attempt to improve battery life and heat management, both of which are essential for a great smartphone experience. However, in trying to improve on those two things, OnePlus has slowed everything down from social media apps and Chrome to Candy Crush Saga on its latest flagship phones.
This is reminiscent of Apple’s throttling controversy a few years ago, revealing that it had slowed down its older devices through software updates to improve the life of degraded batteries. Of course, OnePlus phones are brand new flagships, and there is some expectation with the new hardware that the user will get all the power and functionality that comes with almost a big one on any smartphone.
Apple ended up adding an option to turn off the throttling, but not without first naming it “peak performance capability”. It’s possible that the flashback OnePlus experienced this week could lead to a similar tipping point, or maybe all OnePlus devices in the future will fall victim to its software changes.
