Ryan day and his team have got off to a spectacular start when it comes to their 2022 recruiting class. It is a class that is currently ranked # 2 in the country on the 247Sports Composite team recruiting rankings.
The class includes three of the country’s top linebacker prospects in Gabe Powers, CJHicks and Dasan mccullough. These three players will play together in the All-American Under Armor 2023 game, as all three have been invited and engaged to play in the game.
Powers is working hard to prepare for a great senior season for Marysville as well as a great career at Ohio State. He works with a speed trainer at Butch Reynolds who was a track star at Ohio State and the Olympics. Powers also works hard in the weight room. On Thursday he did a 600 pound deadlift and squatted 515 pounds. Watch the video of the powers performing these lifts.
Powers is striving to increase his weight to 235 pounds before the start of his senior football season and his 40-yard dash speed in under 4.5 seconds. He played his junior season at 220 pounds on his 6-foot-4 frame.
Powers and his Marysville teammates finished the 2020 season with a 6-2 record, including a 48-41 second-round playoff loss to a then undefeated Clayton North team. It was a game in which Powers made 10 tackles including two for loss. He forced a fumble and recovered one. On the other side of the ball, Powers rushed for 100 yards and a touchdown on just ten carries. He caught four passes for 45 yards and threw a 40 yard touchdown pass. Powers also returned five kicks for 110 yards as he played almost every game of the game as he was in for about 300 yards overall that night.
Powers played the middle linebacker heading into his second season when he moved up to the outside linebacker and made 90 tackles. The Buckeyes recruited him as an outside linebacker.
Powers had nearly two dozen scholarship offers including Penn State, Notre Dame, Wisconsin, West Virginia, Nebraska, Michigan, Florida State, Tennessee, Colorado, Boston College and Pitt before choosing the Buckeyes.
Powers is a 4-star prospect in the 247Sports Composite. He is the No. 33 overall hopeful 2022 nationwide, the No. 2 outside linebacker and No. 1 overall in the state of Ohio.
