WWE WrestleMania 35 Kickoff Show
Broadcast live on April 7, 2019 on the WWE network (second hour on the USA network)
East Rutherford, New Jersey, at MetLife Stadium
[Hour One] -The Kickoff Show started with a shot of fans outside the stadium, while Jonathan Coachman welcomed the viewers. Coachman was joined by a panel of Sam Roberts, Paige and JBL.
-The hosts crossed the WrestleMania map. JBL said he would make comments for Kurt Angle's final match and that Paige would be part of the broadcast squad for the WWE Women's Tag title.
-Charly Caruso and Pat McAfee have signed up at the WrestleMania stage. McAfee was wearing a shirt, jacket and shorts (he's so crazy !!!).
-The panel discussed Roman Reigns against Drew McIntyre and there was a CGI chart over the ring with both men.
-Coachman has plugged the Kickoff Show matches and he understands the raw tag title match. He noted that the WWE Cruiserweight Championship match will open the show.
-Kayla Braxton interviewed Big E and Xavier Woods behind the scenes and asked them if they had won the challenge match to allow Kofi Kingston to participate in the WWE Championship match. She also asked if there was any fear that the Kingston tank would not be full after everything he went through to get into the game. Big E said that his tank is so full that it's like when you fill up your tank too much and you have gas on your hands.
-Edge and Christian joined the panel instead of Paige and JBL and discussed the WWE Championship game.
1. Buddy Murphy vs. Tony Nese for the WWE Cruiserweight Championship. Members of Vic Joseph's 205 Live broadcast crew, Nigel McGuinness and Aiden English were on the phone. The bell rang to start the match and Murphy immediately ran to his knees, which Nese avoided. The wrestlers fought on the ropes. Murphy lifted Nese while he was standing on the sending rope, then dropped him on the upper turnbuckle. An ad was aired for WrestleMania's main event via a split screen.
With Murphy hanging over the middle rope, Nese made a lunar attack on him for a tally in half at 4:45. Murphy suffered a cut above his left eye. He opted for Murphy's Law, but Nese fought back against two players. Murphy returned immediately with one knee high, then Nese caught him with an inverted huracanrana. Murphy headed for the ring to avoid a knee running and Nese took a dip at the Fosbury Flop.
At 9 am, Murphy made a 450 for a good fall almost. Murphy came back with Murphy's Law and had the brooch, but Nese set foot on the rope. Murphy met a superkick. Nese startled Murphy in the corner, then followed a knee in motion and marked the pin …
Tony Nese defeated Buddy Murphy in 10:40 to win the WWE Heavyweight Championship title.
POV from Powell: A good match and a change of title to open the show. The stadium is full enough to be beautiful and beautiful, so it was not like it was played in a half empty stadium as we saw for the inaugural match a few years ago.
-Caruso and McAfee have discussed with Sal and Q of Impractical Jokers …
Paige and JBL were back on the board in the place of Edge and Christian, and Jerry Lawler was sitting while they were discussing the match between Shane McMahon and The Miz.
2. WrestleMania Women's Battle Royal. The broadcast team consisted of Michael Cole, Renee Young and Percy Watson. Lilian Garcia was the announcer. A group of participants went out together. Ruby Riott, Liv Morgan, Sarah Logan, Lana, Ember Moon, Maria, Sonya Deville, Mandy Rose, Nikki Cross, Mickie James, Carmella, Kairi Sane, Dana Brooke, Zelina Vega and Candice LeRae were among the participants. Naomi and Asuka received separate entries. Maria was the first woman eliminated. Cross was eliminated by Asuka. Naomi was third.
Moon performed an eclipse on Lana, who came back and eliminated Moon shortly after, because of a lot of boos. Sane lit Lana with chops. The trio of the Riott Squad is allied with Lana and Logan eliminated it. Sane made a top rope drop on Logan. The Riott team eliminated Sane. Brooke eliminated Riott and Morgan back to back. Rose and Deville eliminated Vega. Brooke was eliminated to perfection, as Deville held the top rope early and Brooke kept running and ironing. She ended up being flipped over the apron. James eliminated Rose, then Deville eliminated James.
The last three were Asuka, Logan and Deville. Asuka worked on both women. With Deville on the apron, Asuka swept her leg with a kick to eliminate it. Logan eliminated Asuka. While Logan was celebrating, Carmella returned to the ring and beckoned. After a brief battle, Carmella eliminated Logan to win the match. Carmella hugged an elderly man near the ring, probably his father …
Carmella won the WWE Women's Battle Royal in 10:30.
POV from Powell: In fact, the idea of an unexpected winner excited me when it seemed that Logan had won. For what it's worth, ROH used the same approach last night when Kenny King disappeared and came back to the end to win the Honor Rumble.
-Coachman and the panel talked about the main event of WrestleMania. Paige noted that she was 12 when she met Becky Lynch for the first time. They all agreed that this was the main legitimate event. Lawler recalls that Lynch told her that she was watching him on Youtube and that she wanted to punch him like he does for one of his opponents.
[Hour Two] – An opening session was broadcast for the part of the USA Network show, which was also broadcast on WWE Network, Youtube, etc. Coachman rescheduled the show and introduced the second-hour panel consisting of Roberts, Shawn Michaels and David Otunga, his birthday. Michaels wore a leather vest, a white T-shirt and a tie (he's even wackier than McAfee !!!). Michaels spoke of DX's entry into the Hall of Fame and stated that it was too late for Chyna to be inducted.
Coachman led the panel across the WrestleMania lineup. The panel discussed the Triple H match against Batista and relied on Michaels because of his friendship with both men. Michaels talked about leaving as you please and Batista's perception that Triple H had kept him on the ground and that he had not been able to leave as he pleased. Regarding Triple H, Michaels said, "He was next to me to become famous and now I work for him. Either you treat him like a man, or you do not do it …
3. "The Revival" Scott Dawson and Dash Wilder vs. Zack Ryder and Curt Hawkins for raw tag titles. Michael Cole, Corey Graves and Renee Young commented. Cole noted that Hawkins normally wore the colors of the New York Mets, but he turned things upside down by wearing green for the New York Jets. Wilder came in and Graves spoke of him as a heavy hand (following the knockout that he threw on the attacker at Bret Hart's Hall of Fame). "You do not want to argue with this young man," said Cole. Funny.
Ryder was isolated during a stretch and then performed a double choker on both members of Revival. He tried a pass, but Dawson knocked Hawkins off the apron. Ryder eventually put Backson in the background and handed the tag to Hawkins, who cleaned the house and played in front of the crowd with a war cry. Hawkins had a two count down. Shortly after, Hawkins had pinned Wilder, but Dawson had pulled him to the ground to break him.
Dawson brainstormed Hawkins in the ring. A song like "let's go Hawkins" broke out. Back in the ring, Hawkins was limp when Dawson tried to take it. Dawson slapped him and lifted him up so that Hawkins caught him in an inner cradle for 1-2-3. Cole noted that Hawkins' 269-game losing streak was over …
Zack Ryder and Curt Hawkins defeated The Revival at 1:20 pm to win the raw tag titles.
POV from Powell: A good match that was well received by the live crowd. So, three area-specific winners to start the show with Nese, Ryder and Hawkins, from New York, winner, and Carmella being touted as the Queen of Staten Island. Thank God, Enzo Amore and Big Cass are now working elsewhere. Curtis Axel and Chad Gable must pray for Minneapolis to win WrestleMania one of those years. I guess the TV shows that please the Wilder punch are a sign that management is cool with him (like just about everyone else). Hey, maybe they should report Brawl For All, uh, so be it.
Akbar Gbaja-Biamila of American Ninja Warrior has spoken with Caruso and McAfee next to the scene … Booker T has joined the broadcast team …
4. Royal Commemorative Battle André le Géant. The broadcast team consisted of Tom Phillips, Aiden English and Byron Saxton. Participants announced were Braun Strowman, Colin Jost, Michael Che, Andrade, Apollo Crews, Titus O Neil, Tyler Breeze, Jinder Mahal, Jose No Way, Bobby Roode, Chad Gable, Kalisto, Gran Metalik, Lince Dorado, Lince Dorado, Bo Dallas, Curtis Axel, Heath Slater, Rhyno, Viktor, Konnor, Ali, Benjamin Shelton, Luke Gallows, Karl Anderson, Hardy Matt, Jeff Hardy, Otis, Tucker, EC3.
Che and Jost received an entry. Jost wore the new Cleveland Browns jersey from Odell Beckham Jr. (he had been traded from the New York Giants.) The Hardy Brothers were getting a separate entry and Phillips asked if Matt Hardy could win the match for a second consecutive year advertising on USA Network, while the panel was speaking as the Hardys' input music played for an extended period.
Braun Strowman entered the US network exit and the match started. Strowman was screwed up and did not wear a singlet. Jost escaped to the ring. There have been several quick fire eliminations, including EC3. Luke Harper was in the match and he and Strowman had a lost look, but they were cut before they could close their eyes. The fast eliminations continue and Heavy Machinery performs a double suplex on Strowman. Braun was thrown through the ropes in the ring.
Otis made a double crawler on The Ascension, which was shockingly eliminated a few seconds later. Strowman returned to the ring and eliminated Otis and Tucker. Harper took Ali for a suplex on the apron. Strowman kicked Harper and the two men fell on the mat in a cool elimination point. Strowman, Matt Hardy, Jeff Hardy, Andrade and Crews were the last five. Andrade executed a huracanrana on the crews of the apron to eliminate the two men.
The Hardys were trying to eliminate Strowman when Jost and Che returned to the ring and tried to help him. Strowman was released and eliminated the Hardys, leaving him alone with the anchors of the Saturday Night Live Weekend Update. Jost called for a microphone and was booed. Jost said that there were other solutions and that everything should not end with violence. A man in a suit entered the ring. Jost said that this man was his therapist and that he wanted Strowman to absorb some of his anger. The therapist tried to lead Strowman in a breathing exercise. Strowman destroyed it.
"Catch him," Jost told Che, who wore an amateur wrestling hat. Che did not move before trying to eliminate. Strowman grabbed him and hit him to knock him off the apron. Strowman went for a big start on Jost, who dropped his head. Jost tried to eliminate Strowman, who threw him to the mat. Strowman picked up Jost and threw it over the top rope and onto a group of wrestlers underneath for safe disposal.
Braun Strowman won the Royal Battle Memorial André le Géant in 10h20.
POV from Powell: Fun safe. The live crowd enjoyed Strowman's attack on Jost, who heated up everything he did. Braun breaks the series of wins related to New York on the Kickoff Show. At this point, EC3 is hoping better for WrestleMania at Progressive Field in Cleveland, as this is perhaps his only hope. Seriously, why is he treated like a person?
-The panel talked about the royal battle. Roberts asked how Andrade could do something so stupid by essentially eliminating himself.
-A video package broadcast on Ronda Rousey against Charlotte against Becky Lynch. The panel delivered forecasts to close the show.
