Gary Pressy has played at Wrigley Field for 2,679 consecutive Chicago Cubs games – and it matters. This series will end however after this season.
Pressy, 61, who began her career with the Cubs in 1987, is retiring after this season.
"I've been here for a third of a century, 33 years and I think the cup is full," Pressy told the Chicago Tribune on Friday. "I was debating, but I really wanted to spend more quality time with my family.At the star break, I really thought about it and made my decision."
Among his homework, he will play "Take me to the football game" during the seventh round, a tradition made famous by the latest broadcaster Harry Caray and which has continued with guest conductors since the death of Caray in 1998.
"[Mike] Ditka is number 1, "Pressy told the Tribune about her favorite guests. He ran a bit late, walking up the ramp on his artificial hip, grabbed Steve Stone's microphone and made a polka version of it. Then we scored a lot of points.
"Everyone asked," What did you think of Ditka? "I said," He just put it on the map. "
The Cubs will honor Pressy on the last family tour of the season, which ends next Sunday.
Wrigley Field has had a full-time organist since 1967 and the team announced at Tribune that it would begin looking for the replacement for Pressy after the season.
"I hope my last appearance this year will be at another parade," Pressy told the Tribune. "It would work."
