WWE Legends do not receive a check from the Company due to their images on the WWE Network. A new court ruling could set a very interesting precedent for this to happen.
Bill Nye took legal action against Disney after he started airing his show on Disney +. The Science Guy thought he owed him 50% of the royalties from these feeds. Disney argued that they should only give 20%, claiming it was streaming, not broadcast. Streaming has been said to be the natural evolution of home video.
Disney won the case, but in that decision the judge made a very interesting decision. He ruled that streaming content is the progression of VHS and DVD. This could possibly happen to WWE if some legends, who had clauses in their contracts for home video royalties, wanted to insist.
This is a new situation and nothing has been done about it. This opens the door to a possible revisit of the idea of WWE paying captions for the images they broadcast. WWE’s billion dollar Peacock deal could help them pay people who haven’t seen a dime since the WWE Network launched.
