Roman Reigns retains the universal championship
Before the game, we had a behind-the-scenes segment in which Rollins criticized Edge for removing him from the title photo, and said he would be the next contender for whoever wins the main event. This played into the finish, as Reigns would retain his Universal Championship with the help of Seth Rollins.
The fight began with a stare and a duel “Come on Roman! / Come on Edge!” »Sings. The game started off slowly, light in big hits and heavy in grips. This is Roman Reigns’ modus operandi (long, well-paced main event matches), and it’s also likely to give the crowd a chance to gather energy after the explosive ladder match they come to see. Things turn around as Reigns waves his fist for a Superman Punch but Edge counter in a rollup, then they level off with big boots simultaneously.
Edge made a comeback, which led to him locking Reigns into an STF and then switching to a crossface. Reigns sold with characteristic excellence before catching the rope. Edge then went for a Spear but Reigns countered him in Guillotine. Edge escapes from the hold by confronting the two men outside, where Reigns goes to seek his own spear – but Edge has moved, causing Reigns to crash through the barricade. Edge then rolls into the ring to stop the referee’s count, then returns and immediately levels Reigns with a spear. He throws Reigns inside for a count of two. Good product.
We get a referee bump as the match hits fourth gear. Reigns hits Edge with a Superman Punch, which causes Edge to hit the referee. Reigns dismantles a chair outside, bringing in his steel leg after Edge uses the same part of a chair to suffocate Reigns at WrestleMania and SmackDown. Edge escapes and hits Reigns with head butts, then places Reigns in the crossface with the leg of the chair.
The Usos come to help Reigns, but they are blocked by the Mysterio before they can break Edge’s crossface on Reigns. With the referee still absent, Rollins hits the ring and breaks the hold by hitting Edge with a superkick. Reigns shoots for a spear, but Edge counteres with his own spear. A new referee slips in for a count of two. Awesome thing.
Edge prepares for another Spear, but Rollins comes to the apron. Edge throws it – then turns to eat a huge Reigns spear. Reigns holds back. Rollins hits the ring to beat Edge after the match, but Edge fights back and they scuffle in the crowd.
Rating: 4.25 stars. Scientifically paced, intense action, explosive finish. What to expect from a Roman Reigns main event in 2021.
