Of all the events WWE has put on in the coronavirus era, Royal Sunday Rumble can be the most difficult. One of the fun parts is the electricity of the live crowd, their countdown for the next contestant to enter the arena. WWE has pulled a few bunnies out of the hat – “bunnies” in this case, which means strong a la carte events – and is hoping to do so again on Sunday.
It’s a good start. Randy Orton and returning Edge have been announced as the first two entrants in the Men’s Royal Rumble match, rekindling their rivalry for 2020. Kevin Owens is sure to lose his Last Man Standing Universal Championship match to Roman Reigns, but he’s also sure. to be excellent. Finally, there’s the intrigue of Goldberg’s fight against Drew McIntyre WWE Championship.
And hey, the Royal Rumble is all about surprises. You never know who you will see, or who you cannot see. Continue to refresh this page from the start of the main show, 4 p.m. PT / 7 p.m. ET, as we will update with the results and analysis.
Bianca Belair wins Women’s Royal Rumble
After entering No.3, Bianca Belair won the Women’s Royal Rumble. The last three were Charlotte Flair, Rhea Ripley and Bianca Belair. Ripley and Belair teamed up to take out Charlotte. Then they faced each other for the last few minutes, which were excellent.
The first part of the game revolved around Billie Kay, of all people. When her number was called, she entered the arena but not the ring, hanging out at the announcer’s office and handing out her 8×10 to Jerry Lawler. As the ring filled with participants, like Shayna Baszler and Toni Storm, Kay tried to convince them to team up with her, to no avail. Finally, surprise contestant Jillian Hall agreed to be his partner and the two cleaned up the ring.
Their partnership ended about 7 minutes later, when Kay eliminated Hall. It was only the second elimination of the match, with 13 participants so far. Kay was then knocked out gleefully. Things got better with entrants 14 and 15, Rhea Ripley and Charlotte Flair. Lacey Evans then walked in wearing Charlotte Flair’s dress – although she was later knocked out by Baszler, beating that heat point somewhat.
The Rumble then saw a title change. Alicia Fox entered row 21 and was followed into the ring by the R-Truth Champion 24/7. The 24/7 title guys rushed into the ring, and Truth and Fox fought them. With his back turned, Fox then rolled up Truth for the title win. After being knocked out by Mandy Rose moments later, Truth wound up Fox to win her championship.
The Rumble also nearly derailed with some wacky Fiend stuff, as Alexa Bliss walked in and, after being beaten by everyone, began to transform into her evil, invincible alter ego. But, as she transformed, which seemed as silly as it sounds, she was taken down by Ripley. Phew.
Surprise participants so far: Jillian Hall, Victoria, Torrie Wilson.
Rating: 3.25 stars. Decent, good enough considering there was no live crowd to work with. There were some awkward and sloppy places, and the Alexa Bliss segment was so hokey. But the last few minutes between Ripley and Belair were fantastic, which took things up a notch.
Sasha Banks bangs Carmella
Carmella had the best game of her career at the TLC December pay-per-view with Sasha Banks, but that follow-up wasn’t as good. After an average match, Sasha Banks submitted Carmella with the bank statement.
These women were put in a tough spot, following the WWE Championship Game which, while light in action, was heavy in power. The first half saw Carmella beat Banks, but her attack wasn’t particularly convincing. It picked up as the fight turned into more back-and-forth, but even then little was noticeable.
Perhaps the funniest part was how Reginald, Carmella’s manager, got involved, as Carmella was using him as a launching pad at one point. He also accidentally grabbed Sasha as she fell out of the ring, inadvertently saving her from a fall, only for Sasha to work in a hurricane on him. Carmella then took a horrendous suicide dive, landing face first and luckily not taking her own life.
Banks also won the match with a nice scapula transition in his Bank Statement, if you want to make MMA part of your WWE.
Rating: 2.5 stars.
Drew McIntyre defeats Goldberg
It went exactly as planned. The match was short and consisted of three hits: multiple Spears, multiple Claymore Kicks, and a Jackhammer.
It started with McIntyre hitting Goldberg with a head butt and then a spear, copying Goldberg’s move. Goldberg then rolled out and threw McIntyre through a baricade. Once inside the ring, the referee rang the bell. From there it was just a swap of spears and Claymore Kicks, and Goldberg at one point hit a Jackhammer for a two.
After a series of near falls, Goldberg missed a spear, McIntyre’s Claymore hooked up and victory came with it. They kissed after the game.
Classification: 1 star. It could have been fun if there was a live crowd taking part in the exchanges, but how sterile and boring. Goldberg’s limitations – the fact that he can basically only do one thing, a spear – are so bare that it’s hard to really get into the action.
Pre-show results
The Royal Rumble Preshow saw the headlines change, as Nia Jax and Shayna Baszler beat Asuka and Charlotte. Charlotte was pinned down after Lacey Evans intervened in the match and hit her with brass blows. Jax then hit a leg and got the pin.
