Two days before WWE Survivor Series, the Homecoming edition of SmackDown was largely focused on ticking the last boxes before pay-per-view. SmackDown took the remaining spots on the Survivor Series Men’s and Women’s squads and a few visitors left Raw to take on their opponents ahead of Sunday’s event.
The pre-show headlines focused on WWE Champion Drew McIntyre returning to SmackDown to share the ring with Universal Champion Roman Reigns and sign their match contract. But Raw tag champions The New Day also appeared on the show, scoring with future opponents The Street Profits and Raw Women’s Champion Asuka showing up to exchange words with SmackDown defending champion Sasha Banks. .
CBS Sports was with you all night, bringing you recaps and highlights from all the action. Read on for everything you need to know about the SmackDown PPV Go-Home Edition.
Drew McIntyre and Roman Reigns sign contract for Survivor series
McIntyre came to the ring for the signing of his contract with Reigns ahead of an advertisement. After the break, Reigns’ music hit and the Universal Champion took a long time to make his entrance, forcing McIntyre to sit in the ring and wait for him. Reigns walked over to the ring and paused again at the bottom of the ramp, then back onto the ring steps. Reigns then forced WWE official Adam Pearce out of his seat so he could take the chair at the head of the table.
Reigns looked down at McIntyre and told him that he knew he would beat Randy Orton on Raw to win back the WWE Championship. Reigns also said McIntyre has long been the right guy in the right place at the wrong time. McIntyre said he knew what Reigns was trying to do, but he wasn’t going to flip a table and hit him because he already had his game on Sunday. McIntyre said he was just going to do what he was told to show up and do, sign the contract. McIntyre signed and told Reigns to use his last two days of peace to prepare for war. Reigns told McIntyre he was a secondary champion and a prop, while Reigns is the champion and the face of the promotion. The universal champion then said that one day McIntyre would love him for the lessons he taught him and Reigns would love him right away, because McIntyre will always be his ‘favorite number two’.
It was refreshing to see a contract signing with WWE that didn’t end in a fight. This is extremely rare in the history of these segments over the past decades. The messages delivered by both men were strong, meaningful and added a sense of weight to a game that has no real stake beyond personal pride. Reigns came out better than McIntyre, but right now that’s exactly what happens when you speak verbatim with The Tribal Chief. Category B
Murphy takes victory over Seth Rollins
Rollins cut a backstage promo in the show’s opening hour, taking credit for everything Murphy had earned since becoming his disciple. Rollins vowed to teach one last lesson, then send Murphy back to having nobody and nothing.
Murphy def. Seth Rollins via Pinfall after hitting Murphy’s Law. Murphy was escorted into the ring by the Mysterio family before being jumped by Rollins at the start of the match. After tying Murphy up in the ropes, Rollins tried to grab a kendo stick from under the ring, but Rey Mysterio grabbed the stick. Rollins attacked Rey and then continued with an attack on Dominik Mysterio before Murphy broke free, only to be quickly thrown to the ground by Rollins, who then began hunting down Aalyah Mysterio as the show went public. After the break, Rollins and Murphy were back in the ring as usual. Murphy managed to outlast a Rollins’ hawk arrow to strike Murphy’s Law for the win, celebrating with the Mysterios after the win.
It was nice to see Murphy take the, if not obvious, victory as Rollins heads for a scheduled time off as he and Becky Lynch anticipate the birth of their child. It’s kind of inexcusable to use Rollins stalking towards Aalyah as a transition to commercials only to come back from hiatus without mentioning what happened. Was Rollins about to physically assault a 19 year old? What stopped him? Dramatic transitions are meaningless if they are only “the moment the series was interrupted.” Quality: C +
What Else Happened on WWE SmackDown?
The New Day & The Street Profits def. Robert Roode, Dolph Ziggler, King Corbin and Sami Zayn via pinfall after Montez Ford hit Zayn with a frog splash. The match took place after The New Day cut a promo in the open show and was faced with all four heels only to be saved by profits. As the match unfolded, Kingston struck a top rope crossbody but accidentally collided with Ford, causing problems between the teams. Despite the communication problem, the Profits managed to score the victory for their team by pinning Zayn who deliberately stayed out of the game until the home stretch.
Daniel Bryan was backstage when Zayn entered his interview. After Bryan mocked Zayn, Zayn tried to confront him to be pushed off the ground. Zayn left the area saying Bryan was lucky to focus on Bobby Lashley at Survivor Series. Bryan then got his interview, speaking about his issues with Roman Reigns and Jey Uso after being attacked by Uso after their Survivor Series qualifier several weeks ago.
Adam Pearce has announced that Otis and Bayley have been selected as members of their respective teams for SmackDown at Survivor Series. Natalya was upset that she didn’t have a seat, but was told she had a game to play.
Qualifying match for the Survivor series – Natalya beats. Tamina via submission with the Sharpshooter. It was Natalya’s third attempt to qualify for the team and ultimately got the job done in a short game.
Carmella attacked Sasha Banks for the third week in a row. Banks and Asuka were in the ring discussing their next Survivor Series match when Carmella ran in and attacked, suspending Banks in the corner and throwing a kick before leaving.
Daniel Bryan beats. Jey Uso via pinfall with a roll-up. Uso wasted little time in the match before slamming, leading Bryan out of the ring and clearing the table of announcements, but Bryan was able to retaliate before Uso could use the table. This situation was only temporary, however, with Uso’s rear body dropping Bryan across the table a few minutes later. Bryan, still struggling with kidney injuries from Uso’s previous attack, attempted to lock a LeBell lock, but Uso retaliated by pounding his injured kidneys. After eating a series of superkicks, Bryan lifted his knees on a splash from Uso to score the roll-up for the win.
