The first WWE SmackDown after SummerSlam had a lot of work to do, immediately addressing the huge comebacks from Brock Lesnar and new SmackDown Women’s Champion Becky Lynch. While Lesnar did not appear on the show, his return was felt as it led Finn Balor to challenge for the title to universal champion Roman Reigns rather than wait on the sidelines for “The Beast” to receive. his championship opportunity.
For Lynch, who returned to SummerSlam to defeat Bianca Belair in 26 seconds, there was a crowd of women looking for a chance to fight for the SmackDown Women’s Title. After a fatal foursome, however, it was Belair who got the chance to right SummerSlam’s wrongs.

Bianca Belair wins the title from Becky Lynch
Becky Lynch opened the show with an in-ring promo, saying she missed the fans and that giving up the Raw Women’s Championship because of her pregnancy was the hardest thing she’s ever had to do. She said she’s deadlier now because she has more to fight for than herself. Lynch said she wasn’t sorry for her controversial SummerSlam win, it was just preparation and taking the opportunity when she was able to beat Bianca Belair in under 30 seconds, a line that drew Belair on. the ring. Belair said she wouldn’t find an excuse, but she also didn’t agree with what happened during their brief watch and challenged Lynch to a title match later in. the night. Zelina Vega, Carmella and Liv Morgan all followed suit, each demanding their own title match before Lynch simply said “Nah” and left the ring.
Bianca Belair beat. Liv Morgan via pinfall with a kiss of death. After the chaos of the previous segment, a four-way elimination match immediately began. Beliar took out Vega first, reducing the field to three. Moments later, Morgan took out Carmella, leaving her alone with Banks in what was now a No. 1 contender match. After a long one-on-one time, Belair finally ended Morgan with a kiss of death. to secure her revenge for the SmackDown Women’s Championship.
SmackDown’s feminine locker room is a bit of a mess. Vega and Carmella were given endless challenges when Belair was champion and lost time and time again. Morgan was building up some momentum, but only wrestled twice in July and the foursome was their first match since Money in the Bank on July 18. but Belair was on the line to win the title. WWE was also weak with the heel turn reported by Lynch, not really going as strong as it took in the opening segment to establish her current persona. At least Belair is set up to get something that looks like a legitimate match after the SummerSlam disaster. Grade: C-
Finn Balor challenges Roman Reigns
Paul Heyman was interviewed backstage at the start of the series, asking where he was after Brock Lesnar returned. Heyman said he would stay where he always is, alongside Roman Reigns, only to find out he was kicked out of Reigns’ locker room. Later on the show, the Usos confronted Heyman, saying he knew Lesnar would be there and wondering why Heyman sent them back to the locker room before Reigns’ game with John Cena at SummerSlam. Heyman said he didn’t give the order, Reigns did, but the Usos didn’t believe him until they returned to the locked locker room without Heyman. Reigns will show up later and ask Heyman if he’s joining him in the locker room.
The show ended with Reigns, the Usos and Heyman in the ring for a championship celebration. Heyman told the crowd it was time to celebrate Reigns towering over John Cena at SummerSlam, before being interrupted by Finn Balor. Balor has said he was denied his opportunity at SummerSlam by Cena and will not sit still while Edge and Lesnar aim for the Universal Championship. Balor was going, he said, to challenge Reigns to a match at Extreme Rules, but didn’t trust anyone enough to stick around and instead challenged Reigns for a title next week on SmackDown. Balor then threw the mic on Reigns before attacking the Universal Champion. As the two Usos attacked Balor, Street Profits rushed into the ring to even the numbers as Reigns walked away. Balor landed a knockout blow on Jey Uso when the show was no longer airing.
The addition of new wrinkles with seeds of suspicion towards Heyman from “The Bloodline” was a nice touch as Reigns’ well-received act is starting to get a bit stale. It was also important that Balor getting kicked out of his title shot wasn’t entirely overlooked. Hopefully WWE can move forward with booking a Reigns vs. Balor match for SmackDown. Title matches on TV are always welcome, although it looks like we’re destined to see Reigns take on Lesnar when WWE returns to Saudi Arabia. Category B
What else happened on WWE SmackDown?
- Cesaro beat. Chad Gable by disqualification after the intervention of Otis. Cesaro was attempting a Cesaro Swing when Otis jumped into the ring to attack. Gable and Otis continued their attack after the game.
- Baron Corbin attempted to buy Big E’s Money in the Bank contract. Corbin is rich now, having lucked out in Las Vegas and used that money in a failed Big E contract offer, though Big E shot him even after a $ 100,000 offer.
- Shinsuke Nakamura and Rick Boogs beat. Robert Roode & Dolph Ziggler via pinfall when Boogs pinned Roode after a slam of the pump handle.
- Sami Zayn beat. Dominik Mysterio via pinfall after a Helluva Kick. Rey Mysterio was at ringside and tried to calm Dominik down after the loss, but Dominik ignored him and walked away.
