An accident involving a pickup truck and a SUV on Sunday morning on Highway 20A in Sheldon City claimed the lives of three New Jersey family members, the Wyoming County Sheriff's Office reported. Seven other people were injured.

According to sheriff Gregory Rudolph, two women were ejected from the sport utility vehicle in which the family of nine was riding. Coroner Jennifer Prutsman-Pfeiffer declared his death on the scene.

A 4-year-old injured head died an hour later at the Wyoming County Community Hospital in Warsaw, Rudolph said. Their identity is not disclosed pending the notification of other members of the family.

Four more children in the SUV, a 14-year-old, a 10-year-old and two other 4-year-olds were taken to Buffalo's Oishei Children's Hospital. Another woman in the sport utility vehicle was transported to the Erie County Medical Center in Buffalo. A man in the vehicle was treated at the Wyoming County Community Hospital and released. Sheriff Rudolph stated that the nature of their injuries was hidden.

The driver of the van, Richard Sawicki, 20, from Lackawanna, was treated.

Investigators said Sawicki was heading south on Maxon Road around 6:30 am, crossed a stop sign on Highway 20A and hit the westbound SUV.

Sawicki was arrested for willful homicide, drunk driving and reckless driving.

He was brought before the Warsaw Municipal Court and returned to Wyoming County Prison instead of a $ 100,000 or $ 200,000 bail pending his court appearance on June 10. His driver's license was also suspended. Additional charges are expected, said Rudolph.
