Senator Mike Enzi is retiring.
The Wyoming Republican announced Saturday that he would not run for a fifth term in 2020.
"I have a lot to do in the next 18 months," he said. "I want to focus on budget reform, I do not want to be overwhelmed by the distractions of another campaign, and after this year I will find other ways to serve."
Enzi was first elected in 1996 to replace Senator Al Simpson and chairs the Senate Budget Committee. During his 22 years in the Senate, he has served as Chair of the Senate Committee on Health, Education, Work and Retirement.
He stressed Saturday his case champion bipartisan legislation. "I did not enter the Senate for whimsical titles," he said. "I like to legislate."
The 75-year-old man made the announcement in his hometown of Gillette, Wyo., Where he began his political career in 1975 as mayor. He has also served in both Houses of the Wyoming State Legislature.
