Senator Mike Enzi (R-Wyo.), Chairman of the Senate Budget Committee, announced Saturday that he would retire in 2020, after 22 years in office.
Enzi, 75, announced his decision at a press conference at Gillette City Hall. "I have a lot to do in the next 18 months," Enzi said, according to the Star Tribune Casper. "I want to focus on budget reform. I do not want to be overwhelmed by the distractions of another campaign. After this year, I will find other ways to serve.
Enzi's retreat opens a seat in a Republican state and draws attention to Rep. Liz Cheney (R-Wyo.), Who unsuccessfully tried to challenge Enzi in the 2014 elections. Cheney, the daughter of Former Vice President Richard B. Cheney, is the third leader of the House.
Enzi began his political career as mayor of Gillette, then moved to the Wyoming legislature. He was sworn in 1997. Enzi passed more than 100 bills.
He is currently chairman of the Budget Committee and has played a key role in signing the 2017 tax break.
Senator John Barrasso (R-Wyo.) Congratulated Enzi in a statement.
"The character, courage and credibility of Mike Enzi have made him a respected moral leader in the US Senate. In the Senate, he has never wavered in four warrants to God, his family or Wyoming, "said Barrasso. "The Senate and Wyoming will miss the valuable leadership of the trusted boss of our Congressional delegation.
