Xavien Howard and Dolphins agree on restructured contract

The Dolphins didn’t want to trade cornerback Xavien Howard and they won’t have to trade him.

Howard asked for a trade when he showed up to training camp because the team had pushed back on his efforts to revise his contract. Howard said last Sunday that he was still ready to work things out with the team and that the two sides have come to an agreement.

According to several reports, Howard and the Dolphins have agreed to a restructured contract. Howard’s agent David Canter posted a tweet thanks the Dolphins for “doing something unexpected and difficult” with “absolute class and professionalism”.

The new deal increases his guaranteed payout in 2021 from $ 12.075 million to over $ 12.785 million and adds incentives that could push his payout to over $ 16.285 million.

Howard’s compensation in 2022 of $ 12.975 million has also been guaranteed against injuries and will become fully guaranteed on the first day of the next championship year. Armando Salguero from the Miami Herald reports that dolphins also gave Howard has assured they will revisit the deal in early 2022 to bring it in line with the market if Howard is both healthy and productive this season.

Howard was absent from training for most of camp due to an ankle injury. We’ll probably know soon if the contract change puts him back on his feet.
