Last month's news has been dominated by reports that Microsoft plans to offer the Xbox Game Pass to Nintendo Switch. That said, it does not seem that Microsoft plans to stop there, that is to say that we could very well see Xbox Game Pass on a PlayStation console in the near future. And if you had said that just two years ago, I would have thought you were crazy, but we are there.

Speaking to Geekwire, Xbox head Phil Spencer reiterated once again that Microsoft had big plans for Xbox Game Pass and wanted to bring it to any player on a device wishing to play it.

"We want to use the Game Pass on any device that someone wants to play on. Not just because it's our business, but really because the business model allows people to consume and find games they would never have played in another space. "

Of course, some say that using the Xbox Game Pass on each device cannibalize sales of Xbox hardware, which is true. But this point is missing the overview. Large sums of money are not in hardware sales, but in the back end with software sales.

"It is not there that you make money. The activity within games is really about selling games, and giving away access to games and content in this way is the fundamental activity. So if you open it, the more people can play, the more they appreciate the art. This increases the size of the company. "

As you can see, Spencer thinks that the Xbox Game Pass can open up to huge markets that it can not currently reach. And he's right. From consoles to PCs to mobile phones, the video game market does not represent a significant part of the market currently exploited by Microsoft. And whatever the quality of its next console, it really will not change. The Xbox Game Pass can hurt sales of the Xbox console, but Microsoft opens the door to huge new markets that will more than offset the money lost on console sales. Or at least that's what seems to be the thought of the Xbox.
