Xbox’s cloud gaming service just got the hardware upgrade you’ve been trying to get for months. Talk to The edge, Microsoft representatives have confirmed that Xbox cloud gaming now works fully on Xbox Series X hardware, concluding a backend upgrade that quietly launched during the summer.
So what does that mean? So far, not much, but it suggests great possibilities for the future.
On the one hand, the Xbox Series X can produce games in 4K resolution. While cloud gaming currently streams games at 60 frames per second, the service only produces games at 1080p resolution. Moving the entire operation to an Xbox Series X frame could theoretically align it with what’s available on Microsoft’s most high-end model.
But the switch could also open access to games which are otherwise inaccessible to players excluded from next-gen hardware. Obviously, it’s still hard to get your hands on an Xbox Series X these days (and, to a lesser extent, its more computing cousin, the Xbox Series S). Don’t expect it to get any easier anytime soon. Just last week Xbox boss Phil Spencer said so much.
” Unfortunately, [the console shortage is] is going to be with us for months and months, certainly until the end of this calendar year and into the next calendar year, ”Spencer Recount The Envelope, while pointing out that the much-discussed chip shortage is by no means the only determining factor in delivering consoles to gamers.

You might think that Xbox is still squarely in the period of transition between generations of consoles; Not only are many proprietary games coming out for both Xbox One and Xbox Series X / S, but Xbox’s current next-gen slate is quite thin, including a handful of games like Microsoft Flight Simulator and The way (who, surprise, no longer an Xbox exclusive).
But, contrary to what the leaders said last year, Xbox’s next roster is flush with new generation games only, including Red drop, Fable, tracker 2, Crushers, Always wild, and Starfield. The ability to stream these games directly to a latest generation Xbox or, damn it, to a mobile device, computer or smart TV– would cancel the need to refresh Discord servers and stand in line at dawnin the rain at your local Best Buy.
