Xbox FPS Boost Coming Soon to Fallout 4 and Other Older Bethesda Games

After launch of the FPS Boost function in February Along with a handful of games, Microsoft has announced that five more games, all from Bethesda, will soon get FPS Boost support.

This news comes from last episode of The official Xbox podcast. In his opening section, Xbox Live’s Larry “Major Nelson” Hryb and Xbox Communications Director Jeff Rubenstein discussed Microsoft’s recent acquisition of Bethesda. To celebrate the deal, a bunch of new Bethesda games have been added to Game Pass. But what excited me the most is that five Bethesda games on the service will soon get FPS Boost support, a feature that allows older games to run at higher frame rates on the Xbox Series X and the Series S.

The five games in question are Fallout 4, Fallout 76, Prey, The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim Special Edition, and Dishonored: Definitive Edition.

Something interesting, if you care about this stuff, is that Fallout 4 was one of the first games we saw using FPS Boost before the new feature got an official name. In a short video offered without too much context last October, Microsoft presented Fallout 4 running at 60 frames per second. While Xbox gamers might already be using the game’s mod support to achieve similar performance improvements, it will finally be an official feature soon.

The podcast didn’t give a specific date on when to expect this latest crop of games to receive FPS Boost support. Looks like it can happen when the Next big Xbox Series X / S update takes place, which will add per-game settings allowing gamers to switch between Auto HDR and FPS Boost on games that support it.

I recently checked FPS Boost and left very impressed. This made older games more modern and playable without the need for additional mods or downloads. I’m glad to see how something like Fallout 76 will work with FPS Boost, as its performance on consoles is notoriously poor. But now that Fallout 76 it’s rather good, it would be great to see it perform better on next-gen Xbox consoles.
